MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman
Joy Naukot of the West Virginia University track and field team became the fastest Mountaineer in program history to compete in the women's 5,000 meters after posting a time of 15:36.87 on Saturday night at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational inside of the Track & Tennis Center in Boston, Massachusetts.
The freshman finished 18
th overall in her collegiate debut of the event.
With the time, Naukot surpasses alumna Marie Louise Asselin, who has held the record since 2010. Asselin collected a time of 15:50.53 in the 5k at the NCAA Indoor Championships, where she finished as the national runner up.
In the 3,000 meters, graduate student
Madison Trippett had a career outing after finishing with a personal best time of 9:12.27, claiming 38
th place.
Next, WVU will conclude the regular indoor season by sending split squads to Boston, Mass. and University Park, Pennsylvania on Feb. 21. The Terrier DMR Challenge/Last Chance Meet will be held at the Track & Tennis Center in Boston, while the Penn State Tune-Up will take place at the Multi-Sport Facility & Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track in University Park.
