
Mountaineers Host Mercyhurst on Friday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 25 West Virginia University women's basketball team continues its home stand on Friday when they take on Mercyhurst inside Hope Coliseum in Morgantown.
Tipoff against the Lakers is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, and gates open at 6 p.m. Friday's contest will be broadcast live on the Mountaineer Sports Network, including 100.9 FM, with Andrew Caridi on the call. Fans can also listen to the game on the Varsity Network App.
Additionally, the game will be broadcast on ESPN+, with Eric Little and Meg Bulger on the call. Live stats and game notes are available on WVUsports.com.
Kickoff the weekend with the Mountaineers and Friday Night Hoops. Weeknight happy hour will be in effect from doors open to tipoff, where select beverages and concessions will be half price.
West Virginia (6-2) and Mercyhurst (0-7) meet for the second time in program history. The Mountaineers won the only meeting during the 2008 season with an 88-38 final score.
Of note, the Mountaineers have not lost at home vs. a non-Power 5 opponent since Dec. 20, 2012, vs. Duquesne. During the last three seasons, the Mountaineers are 27-3 in nonconference action and 34-3 when playing any game inside the confines of Hope Coliseum.
The Mountaineers are averaging 77.5 points per game this season and allowing just 60.3 points from their opponents. Additionally, WVU is forcing its opponents into 21.8 turnovers, the 38th best nationally, and has produced 10.5 steals a game, the 75th best mark in the nation.
West Virginia has forced 25+ turnovers and 16+ steals in three contests this season. WVU ranks 80th in the nation with a +4.0 turnover margin.
The Mountaineers offense this season has been about getting downhill and to the charity stripe. WVU is third in the country in free throw attempts, averaging 29.1 per game, and third among three throws made per game at 20.0.
Junior guard Gia Cooke leads the Mountaineers in scoring this season with 16.6 points per game. She has scored double figures six times and has scored 20+ points in each of her last three games. Kierra Wheeler has averaged a double-double in her last three outings with 13.6 points and 10.6 rebounds. She leads the Mountaineers on the glass with 6.4 rebounds per game.
