
Mountaineers Lead After Smallbore at WVU Fall Classic

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 5-ranked West Virginia University rifle team sits in first place after shooting a smallbore score of 2357 at the WVU Fall Classic on Saturday afternoon, at the Bill McKenzie Rifle Range inside the WVU Shell Building in Morgantown.
No. 12 Kentucky sits in second place with a 2392, No. 16 Morehead State is third with a 2308, No. 18 North Georgia is fourth with a 2273, Wofford is in fifth at 2236 and Mount Aloysius rounds out the team with a 2223 following the opening day of action. The Mountaineers enter tomorrow's air rifle portion of the competition leading by 28 points over Kentucky.
Eight Mountaineers packed the smallbore leaderboard, with sis occupying the top eight spots.
Junior Griffin Lake paced the Mountaineer efforts in the match with a season high of 594. Junior Lauri Syrja finished just behind in second place with a 591. His score also set a season high.
Sophomore Camryn Camp rounded out the podium in third place with a 588. Sophomore Jennifer Kocher finished in sixth place with a 584 while senior Maximus Duncan claimed seventh at 582. Freshman Jack Ogoreuc tied for eighth with a 580. Sophomore Ashlyn Blake was the final Mountaineer in action with a 575.
The scores of Lake, Syrja, Camp, Kocher and Blake counted toward the Mountaineers' team total.
West Virginia wraps up the second annual WVU Fall Classic with air rifle on Sunday, Nov. 16, at the Bill McKenzie Rifle Range. The first air rifle relay is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. ET, with sighters and prep time set for 8:45 a.m. The second relay will take place at 10:45 a.m., following a 15-minute sighting period. Sunday's air rifle exhibition final will conclude action from the WVU Fall Classic at 12:45 pm.
