
Rifle Records Fall in Season Opening Win Over Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team opened its 2025-26 season with a 4745-4718 win over No. 10 Memphis on Saturday at the R.F. Fogelman Rifle Range in Memphis.
The Mountaineers scored 2394 in air rifle to set a new program record in the discipline. The mark was one point better than the previous record of 2393, shot twice in program history, happening in each of the last two seasons.
Griffin Lake scored a perfect 600 in air rifle to become the 11th Mountaineer in program history to accomplish the feat. He added a mark of 594 in smallbore to accrue an aggregate total of 1194. His scores in air rifle and aggregate marked new career-highs. The junior scored the top marks in all three disciplines.
Also of note, West Virginia ran its win streak to 27 straight matches. The streak spans three seasons and dates back to the beginning of the 2023-24 campaign.
The Mountaineers claimed both disciplines in the match, winning smallbore 2351-2347 and air rifle at 2394-2371. WVU is now 19-2 all-time against Memphis.
For smallbore and air rifle, juniors Lake and Lauri Syrja, and sophomores Jennifer Kocher, Ashlyn Blake and Camryn Camp served as counters.
Kocher hit new career highs in smallbore and aggregate score. She managed a mark of 1186 after scoring 589 in smallbore and a 597 in air rifle. The effort led to a second-place finish on the overall leaderboard while producing the third-best mark in smallbore.
Syrja turned in a fourth-place finish at the season-opening event. He scored an aggregate mark of 1182 with a 584 in smallbore and a 598 in air rifle. His mark in air rifle was the third best in the field.
Blake and Camp fired similar 1180 scores to finish in a tie for sixth place. Blake scored 581 in smallbore and matched a career-high in air rifle with a 599 and Camp hit marks of 584 in smallbore and 596 in air rifle. Blake's mark in air rifle was the second best in the field.
Freshman Hana Strakusek and Jack Ogoreuc and Junior Maximus Duncan also competed at the event. Strakusek scored a 1178 (581 SB – 597 AR), Ogoreuc a 1167 (581 SB – 586 AR) and Maximus Duncan a 1162 (573 SB – 589 AR).
The win is the Mountaineers' first in Great America Rifle Conference action this season.
Next up, WVU stays on the road against No. 8 Murray State and No. 19 UT Martin on Sunday, Oct. 5. The match is set to begin at 9 a.m. ET, inside the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray, Kentucky.
