
West Virginia Beats Fairmont State in Exhibition

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's basketball team used a balanced offensive and a strong defensive effort to roll to a 95-43 exhibition win over Fairmont State on Sunday evening at Hope Coliseum.
The Mountaineers came out strong, scoring 28 points in the opening quarter and limiting the Falcons to just eight points. WVU maintained control of the game, outscoring Fairmont State in every quarter. The Falcons did not score from the field in the second half, finishing the final 20 minutes 0 of 22 from the floor.
Senior guard Sydney Woodley paced the Mountaineers with 15 points as junior forward Carter McCray and senior guard Sydney Shaw each finished with 14. Junior Riley Makalusky finished with a double-double after securing 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Defensively, West Virginia overwhelmed Fairmont State, forcing 37 turnovers and collecting 21 steals. Woodley finished with a game-high five steals. The Mountaineers capitalized on those opportunities, scoring 40 points off turnovers and 60 points in the paint.
The Mountaineers finished the game 45.9 percent from the floor while limiting Fairmont State to a 9 of 43 mark and just a 20.9 percent mark. West Virginia's bench scored 45 points in the winning effort.
Fairmont State's Gabby Reep finished with a team-leading 15 points.
The Mountaineers are set to open the season on Monday, Nov. 3, when they take on Purdue Fort Wayne inside Hope Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
