LEXINGTON, Va. –
The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team collected two more road wins to move to a perfect 5-0 on the season. WVU scored 4724 to take down VMI (4580) and Mount Aloysius (4415) inside Kilbourne Hall in Lexington on Saturday.
West Virginia ran its win streak to 31 straight matches, the fifth-longest win streak in program history. The streak spans three seasons and dates back to the beginning of the 2023-24 campaign.
The Mountaineers produced winning efforts in both smallbore and air rifle, with scores of 2343 and 2381, respectively. VMI finished with a 2240 in smallbore and a 2340 in air rifle, as Mount Aloysius hit marks of 2215 in smallbore and 2200 in air rifle. The Mountaineers have yet to drop discipline this season.
For smallbore and air rifle, juniors
Griffin Lake and
Lauri Syrja, and sophomores
Jennifer Kocher,
Ashlyn Blake and
Camryn Camp served as counters. The Mountaineers claimed the top six aggregate score on the afternoon.
Kocher set the pace for the Mountaineers, finishing with a 1183 after hitting 585 in smallbore and the top mark in air rifle with a 598. Camp finished in second with a 1182 after producing a match-high smallbore score of 587 and added a 595 in air rifle.
Syrja finished in third place with a 1181 and scores of 585 in smallbore and 596 in air rifle. Blake took fourth place with a 1174 (582 SB – 592 AR),
Maximus Duncan finished fifth with a 1170 (577 SB – 593 AR), and
Jack Ogoreuc finished in sixth with a 1165 (578 SB – 587 AR).
Lake only competed in smallbore action, where he finished with a 586, the second-highest mark in the field.
West Virginia is back in action on Saturday, Nov. 1, in a rematch against Mount Aloysius. The match is the home opener for the Mountaineers and will begin at 9 a.m. ET at the Bill McKenzie Mobile Rifle Range inside the WVU Shell Building.
