
West Virginia Defeats Marshall for First Dual Meet Win

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's swimming and diving team defeated Marshall, 212-208, at Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium on Friday night in Huntington, West Virginia.
In front of a raucous crowd, West Virginia (1-0) began the night with an uphill climb as Marshall won the first three swimming events. The meet had a unique format as multiple events were styled as a "knockout" competition.
With this setup, eight swimmers began the event for round one. The top four swimmers from the first round advanced to the second. The final round consisted of two swimmers going head-to-head to win the event.
The Thundering Herd earned victories in the 400-yard freestyle relay, 1000-yard freestyle and the 50-yard butterfly before West Virginia won its first swimming event. Sophomore Macey Larson placed first in the 50-yard breaststroke, touching the wall at 29.04.
Through the first eight events, West Virginia's best performance came in the 500-yard freestyle. Junior Maddie Smutny set a pool record as she won the event with a final time of 4:50.29. The previous record was set in 2017. Senior Olivia Busch rounded out the top three as she finished third (4:58.18).
In the diving well, the Mountaineers dominated as they earned the top four spots on 1-meter. Senior Abigail Sullivan placed first with 262.95 points, freshman Peyton Worman finished second with 220.58 points and redshirt senior Amari Brown-Swint placed third (220.35).
West Virginia rallied in the final events, starting with the 100-yard individual medley. Freshman Giada Del Medico won the event, touching the wall at 58.56. Freshman Tabi Main placed third with a final time of 58.86.
In the 100-yard breaststroke event, the Mountaineers swept, with Larson winning her second event of the night with a final time of 1:04.28. Redshirt junior Sofia Deste finished second (1:04.32) and sophomore Logan Leckner placed third (1:04.48).
Up next, the men's and women's swimming and diving teams will face Delaware in Newark, Delaware, on Saturday, Oct. 18.
