WVU Collects 900th Program Win Over Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 16-ranked West Virginia University women's basketball team defeated Arizona State, 89-59, on Saturday evening inside Mullett Arena in Tempe. The win marks the 900th in program history.

Senior guard JJ Quinerly and fifth-year Kylee Blacksten pushed the Mountaineers to the road win, each scoring over 20 points in the contest. The duo finished the night 17 of 30 from the floor and added a perfect 13 of 13 from the charity stripe.

Quinerly finished with a game-high 29 points to reach the mark for the third time this season. Blacksten's 24 points are a career high. It is just the second time in her career she has scored over 20 points in a game.

The Mountaineers were efficient in the game, knocking down 50% of its attempts from the floor and 42.9% of its attempts from beyond the arc. WVU added a 24 of 27 mark from the line.

Junior guard Jordan Harrison also finished in double figures with 11 points as she added a season-high eight assists and six rebounds. Junior guard Sydney Shaw added 10 points as senior guard Kyah Watson managed 11 rebounds, marking the second straight game she has reach double figures on the glass. Watson added four steals.

Tied at two, West Virginia strung together 10 straight points thanks to reigning Big 12 Player of the Week Quinerly knocking down back-to-back threes. The run forced the Sun Devils into an early timeout and a 12-point deficit at the 6:25 mark. The Mountaineers produced another double-digit run over the final four minutes of the quarter, outscoring ASU 14-2 to take a 28-9 lead.

Arizona State outscored the Mountaineers 14-8 in the second quarter. West Virginia cashed in on just 3 of 13 attempts from the floor. The offensive struggles in the quarter gave WVU a 36-23 lead at halftime.

Blacksten had the hot hand early in the third with five points as Quinerly chipped in with four points to the media timeout. WVU knocked down four attempts from the floor, outscoring ASU 11-2, and pressured the Sun Devils into four turnovers and a 1 of 6 mark during the opening five minutes of the second half.

A pair of successful trips to the free throw line by Quinerly and Watson pushed the WVU lead to 25 points at 51-26. ASU scored the next five points before the Mountaineers closed the quarter with a 63-38 lead.

West Virginia managed their third 20-plus point quarter of the game in the fourth. WVU outscored ASU 26-21 on their way to its ninth win of the season by 30 or more points.
