MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women's basketball head coach Mark Kellogg has announced the addition of Sydney Woodley (Menifee, California/Long Beach State) to a grant-in-aid for the 2024-25 academic year.
"Sydney is a great addition both on and off the court," Kellogg said. "She is a versatile guard who really found her rhythm this year. She can score at multiple levels on offense and is an elite defender as evidence in her steal numbers this year. Sydney will fill multiple roles for us and bring invaluable experience as a graduate transfer."
"WVU is a great opportunity to exhibit the fruit of hard work in personal growth, academics and in my game," Woodley said. "It's a welcoming culture that allows you to be who you are. I'm excited to get after it on the court and make memories with my team."
The 5-foot-8 guard comes to Morgantown after spending three seasons at Long Beach State, where she appeared in 54 contests and started all 31 games as a junior in 2023-24. Woodley returned to the court this past season after red-shirting the 2022-23 campaign.
Woodley made the most of her return to LBSU's lineup, starting every game in 2023-24 and logging 921 minutes. She held a 45.1% field-goal percentage last season, scoring 335 points and averaging 10.8 per game. A prolific defensive player, she notched an impressive 104 steals for the Beach. Woodley also added 156 rebounds last year, including 93 on the defensive end. She finished the season averaging 2.0 assists per game with 61 total assists on the year.
Woodley saw action in 23 games as a freshman in 2021-22. She averaged 6.6 points and 3.0 rebounds per game, while adding 66 steals, 28 assists and five blocks. Her 66 steals as a freshman tied her for fourth place all-time in CSUN's single-season record book.
Woodley graduated high school from Paloma Valley High, where she was named First Team CalHiSports.com Division 3 All-State. She also was named to the All-CIF Southern Section Team and was a Press Enterprise All-Area selection. Woodley earned first team all-section honors after leading her team to the CIF-Southern Section Division 4AA Title and CIF State Division 3 Championships.
Woodley is the daughter of Russell and Dorothy Johnson and plans to major in journalism at WVU.
