West Virginia Opens Play at Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship Friday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's basketball team (23-6, 12-6 Big 12) opens postseason play in the Second Round of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship on Friday, March 8. The No. 6-seeded Mountaineers will face either No. 11 Cincinnati or No. 14 UCF. Tipoff inside the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri is set for 9 p.m. ET.
The contest against Cincinnati or Central Florida will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Brenda Van Lengen and Sheryl Swoopes on the call. The game also can be heard on the Varsity Network app, with Andrew Caridi on the call. Live stats and game notes will be available on WVUsports.com.
The Mountaineers enter the tournament as a six-seed for the fourth time in program history. WVU is 4-2 all-time as the seed, winning the championship in 2017 with a perfect 3-0 mark.
WVU has advanced to the title game three times across 10 seasons, most recently making an appearance in 2021. WVU also reached the finals in 2014. The Mountaineers are 11-9 all-time in tournament play and added five trips to the semifinals.
West Virginia holds a perfect 4-0 record this season against Cincinnati and Central Florida after sweeping the season series against both. The Bearcats and the Knights are both making their first appearances at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship in their inaugural seasons in the conference.
The Mountaineers are 9-5 all-time against Cincinnati (13-6, 5-13 Big 12) as the series is tied 1-1 in contests played on a neutral floor. This season, WVU defeated the Bearcats, 68-53, in Morgantown before going on the road to complete the season sweep with a 72-43 win.
In the final meeting, WVU shut out UC in the first quarter. It marked the second straight quarter shutout from WVU in a game, also shutting out Houston the game prior, to become the first team to accomplish the feat.

JJ Quinerly was named the Big 12's Defensive Player of the Year and an All-Big 12 First Team selection for the second straight season. Jordan Harrison earned second-team honors as both Quinerly and Harrison were two-of-five named to the conference's defensive team.
