
No. 71 West Virginia Earns Second Big 12 Victory with Defeat Over Houston

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 71 West Virginia University tennis team defeated the Houston Cougars, 6-1, at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts on Friday.
For the first time since joining the Big 12, West Virginia (13-5, 2-4 Big 12) has won at least two conference matches in a single season. With the win against Houston, the Mountaineers will also have their first winning season since 2010.
The Mountaineers got things rolling in doubles play as they earned the point to lead, 1-0. The pairing of junior Michaela Kucharova and senior Momoko Nagato earned its ninth win of the season in the No. 1 spot, 6-1.
The doubles team comprised of graduate student Ting-Pei Chang and junior Tatiana Lipatova won, 6-1, in the No. 3 seed match.
Kucharova earned the first singles win for the Mountaineers in the No. 5 seed match, winning 6-0, 6-3. Redshirt sophomore Maja Dodik took the second singles victory of the evening with a 6-3, 6-3, win in the No. 4 seed match.
Nagato rallied after she lost the first set, 6-1. She went on to win the next two sets to claim the win, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2, to seal the victory for West Virginia.
