
West Virginia Wins Gold on Day One of Big 12 Indoor Championship

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team completed the first day of the Big 12 Indoor Championship on Friday night in Lubbock, Texas.
The Mountaineers claimed conference victory in the women's distance medley relay, highlighting the day. The team of redshirt senior Sarah Tait, freshman Kishay Rowe, redshirt senior Mikenna Vanderheyden and redshirt junior Ceili McCabe won the Big 12 title with a time of 11:18.08.
"Winning the DMR at this meet is a huge accomplishment. We were able to come out here and pull off what is a very special win," said WVU coach Sean Cleary. "Over the past 20 years West Virginia has had a lot of great moments with the event, and this win rivals many of them."
Vanderheyden also had an impressive showing in the women's 1,000-meter preliminary race, placing second with a time of 2:47.02 to qualify for Saturday's finals.
McCabe finished fourth in the women's preliminary mile, running for a 4:43.60 time qualifying for the conference final. Redshirt sophomore Emily Bryce trailed behind with a 4:52.93 finish.
In the women's 800 meters, redshirt junior Cassandra Williamson added another qualifying time for the Mountaineers running for a 2:07.14 finish.
Freshmen Lily Haught and Izayah Everett both set personal bests in the women's 200-meter dash, recording times of 25.11 and 25.32, respectively.
West Virginia continues tomorrow for the second day of the Big 12 Indoor Championship. The Mountaineers are slated to compete in the women's mile, 1,000 meters, 800 meters, 3,000 meters, the 4x400 meter relay, the high jump and triple jump. The conference championship will kick off at 12 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. Saturday's live results can be found on WVUsports.com.
