
Mountaineers Reach Season Best in Norman

NORMAN, Okla. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team recorded a season-high 195.55 team score in a dual meet against No. 1 Oklahoma inside the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Oklahoma, on Friday night.
The Mountaineers recorded solid scores on every event, led by a 49.125 on floor exercise. They also added scores of 48.975 on vault, 48.75 on the uneven bars and 48.7 on balance beam. The top-ranked Sooners took first place in the dual, recording a program-record score of 198.675 to take the top spot.
Opening up on bars, freshman Amber Lowe's 9.825 led the lineup, followed by a trio of 9.75's from fifth-year senior Abbie Pierson, sophomore Miranda Smith and freshman Jayden McDonnell. Of note, the scores marked a season high for Pierson and a career high for McDonnell. Scoring on bars was completed by sophomore Emma Wehry's return to the lineup, earning a 9.675.
Moving on to vault, WVU kept its momentum going with four scores of 9.8 or higher. Pierson led the way with a 9.825, while a trio of 9.8's from Wehry, senior Kiana Lewis and junior Sierra Muns were just behind her. Junior Brooke Alban capped the rotation with a 9.75.
West Virginia kept it up on floor, using four 9.8+ scores to earn its lone 49.0+ event score of the evening. Pierson and Lowe recorded 9.85's to pace the floor squad. Lewis and freshman Julia Brown tallied matching 9.825's, as Brown made her career debut in the floor lineup. Alban tallied a 9.775 to complete the action on floor.
Finishing out on beam, the Mountaineers faced a little adversity, but kept it together to post an eventual season-high team score. Wehry led the way with a 9.85, followed by Brown's 9.775. Smith and Pierson tallied a pair of 9.7's, while Lowe anchored the lineup after a fall and earned a much-needed 9.675.
Pierson represented West Virginia in the all-around, posting a 39.125 total on all four events.
Next up, WVU prepares for its first double weekend of the season. The two-meet stretch begins on the road in a quad meet at Penn State with Ball State and Towson on Friday, March 1. Competition inside the Nittany Lions' Rec Hall in University Park, Pennsylvania, is set for 6 p.m. ET.
