MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University golf team returns to competition on Friday, Feb. 16 and Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Gators Invitational, hosted by the defending national champions, University of Florida, in Gainesville, Florida.
The tournament, originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, has been moved up due to the predicted inclement weather.
Fifteen teams are scheduled to compete, including No. 22 Florida, No. 30 North Florida, No. 34 USF, No. 52 Florida Gulf Coast, No. 58 Kentucky, No. 73 Augusta, No. 75 Liberty, No. 83 West Virginia, No. 89 Furman, Nebraska, Penn State, Jacksonville, Florida Atlantic, UCF and Navy.
The Mountaineers will tee off at 7:50 a.m. Friday on the par-70, 6,701-yard Mark Bostick Golf Course. Golfers will play 36 holes on Friday and 18 holes on Saturday. If Saturday's round is rained out, golfers will attempt to play the final 18 holes on Sunday.
"Florida is a golf course we are very familiar with, having played in the Gators Invitational every year since 2019," coach Sean Covich said. "I love this tournament and the golf course because it will challenge your discipline, maturity and patience. We will learn a lot about our team this weekend, because we will have to deal with difficult hole locations and when we're out of position, having the patience to make sure we aren't carding a big number. We have to stay committed to being disciplined and patient when out of position. If we can do that, we might have a pretty good team."
Seniors Jackson Davenport and Oli Ménard, juniors Todd Duncan and Max Green and sophomore Kaleb Wilson will represent the Mountaineers at this year's event. The top four scores will count towards West Virginia's overall team score.
To open the spring season, WVU shot 27-under-par for the second lowest 54-hole score in school history at The N.I.T. in Tucson, Arizona.
