
WVU Opens Big 12 Competition at BYU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team prepares to open Big 12 Conference competition against league newcomer BYU on Friday, Feb. 2, in Provo, Utah. Competition inside the Marriott Center is tabbed for 9 p.m. ET
The conference meet will be broadcast live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+, while live stats also are available at WVUsports.com.
Friday's meet marks just the third-ever meeting between West Virginia and BYU, as well as the first as members of the Big 12 Conference. WVU is 0-2 all-time against BYU. The Mountaineers and Cougars last met in 2019 on March 13, in a tri meet with Arizona State in Tempe, Arizona. West Virginia fell to BYU by a score of 195.75 - 195.825.
Last time out, WVU used a season-high score of 49.2 on floor exercise to tally a 194.825 - 194.05 win over Kent State in Kent, Ohio, on Jan. 28. West Virginia also performed well on vault with a 48.875, while the squad tallied scores of 48.625 on balance beam and 48.075 on the uneven bars. Freshman Jurnee Lane's career-high 9.925 also highlighted the floor rotation. Lane was named the Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week following her performance at Kent State.
In the all-around, fifth-year senior Abbie Pierson took the top spot in the final standings with a season-high matching 39.175 total on all four events. Sophomore Emma Wehry made her career debut in the all-around, competing on floor for the first time and earning a 38.575 total for second place. Wehry took home first place on vault (9.875) and bars (9.8), while Pierson and Lane secured first place on beam (9.85) and floor (9.925), respectively. Additionally, Pierson also finished in a tie for second on vault (9.85), and freshman Julia Brown secured a second-place finish on beam (9.8).
In the fourth week of the Road to Nationals rankings, the Mountaineers rank No. 47 overall following the fourth weekend of the NCAA Gymnastics season. Leading WVU's event rankings are the vault and floor lineups, each coming in at No. 46 nationally. The vault squad has a season high of 48.925 and an average of 48.794, while the floor lineup has reached a high of 49.2 for a 48.9 average.
