West Virginia Beats ETSU 85-40 on Education Day

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 15-ranked West Virginia University women's basketball team closed out home nonconference action with an 85-40 win over East Tennessee State on Friday morning inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.
 
Junior guard Jordan Harrison scored back-to-back threes in the first quarter, hitting her second at 5:28, to eclipse the 1,000-career point mark. She finished the contest with a team-leading 17 points and added five assists and five rebounds.
 
The Mountaineers scored 20 points in each quarter on their way to a 45-point victory. It marks the seventh time the Mountaineers have defeated a team by 30 or more points this season.
 
Junior guard Sydney Shaw finished with 15 points and added a game-high six steals. Fifth year forward Kylee Blacksten and senior guard Kyah Watson each managed 11 points. Watson added a team-leading eight board and added four steals. It is the eighth time this season that the Rapid City, S.D. native has led the Mountaineers' rebounding effort.
 
Freshman forward Jordan Thomas finished with eight points and six rebounds.
 
After conceding the opening basket to ETSU, the Mountaineers poured in 18 straight points and finished the frame on a 23-8 run. Shaw paced the Mountaineers with 13 points in 10 minutes, knocking down 5 of 6 from the floor and three from beyond the arc. She also added two steals. WVU finished the quarter forcing more ETSU turnovers (11) than attempted shots (7).
 
Trading baskets early in the third, the Mountaineers strung together 14 points over four minutes in the middle part of the quarter to push its lead to 26. WVU finished the frame on an 18-2 run over the final seven minutes of the half and forced ETSU into nine turnovers. WVU led 44-16 at halftime.
 
The Mountaineers hit eight threes in the half, tied for the most made baskets from beyond the arc in a half this season. WVU's defensive effort resulted in 22 ETSU turnovers and 12 Mountaineer steals. Shaw and Harrison each finished the opening 20 minutes in double figures with 15 and 12 points, respectively.
 
West Virginia tacked on 41 more points in the second half to outscore the Buccaneers by 17 points over the final 20 minutes. Freshman guard Destiny Agubata led WVU in the second half with eight points and added four rebounds. Harrison also managed four of her boards in the second half.
 
The Mountaineers attacked the paint, scoring 44 points from the high percentage area. WVU also forced ETSU into 29 turnovers, resulting in 37 points. West Virginia also held a 39-17 advantage on the glass.
 
The 8,489 in attendance for the game is the fourth most in Coliseum history and the second largest for an Education Day game.
 
Of note, WVU is now 1-0 all-time in the series against ETSU. The Mountaineers have run their nonconference home win streak to 35 games, dating back to the 2018-19 season. West Virginia is now 17-6 all-time against the Southern Conference.
 
Next up, West Virginia hits the road for their first true road game of the season with competition against Temple on Sunday, Dec. 15, inside the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The contest will be the Mountaineers' first on national television, broadcasting on ESPN2.
