MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (8-15, 2-10 Big 12) fell to Cincinnati in three straight sets on Thursday afternoon, 3-0 inside of the Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The Bearcats took the sweep with scores of 16-25, 22-25 and 22-25.
Redshirt junior outside hitter
Cassidy Tanton led the Mountaineers with 13 kills, while hitting .345% and collecting one total block. Senior outside hitter
Hailey Green also tallied 13 kills, on a .333% clip.
Additionally, graduate student setter
Lauren DeLo dished out 35 assists and four total blocks. While junior middle blocker
Laila Ibrahim notched eight of West Virginia's nine total blocks.
Cincinnati kicked off the first set with an early 4-1 scoring run, taking the lead. As points were traded from both sides of the net, a service ace from graduate student libero
Sydney Reed tied the score at 13 all. Cincinnati proceeded with a 10-1 run, as West Virginia trailed, 24-15. The Mountaineers benefited from a UC service error, before a kill from the Bearcats would seal the first set, 25-16.
The Bearcats once again led early in set two, 4-0. Cincinnati continued to dominate the set, until a string of four West Virginia points let the Mountaineers trail, 16-13. West Virginia attempted a comeback, producing three straight points to get the score within three, 21-19. As both teams added kills from their respective sides, Ibrahim added the last swing for WVU, before Cincinnati took the second set, 25-22.
UC utilized another 4-0 run to lead early again in the third and final set. A pair of kills from Tanton along with a UC error let West Virginia trail, 7-5. Cincinnati was relentless at the net, using a 6-1 run to make the score, 16-8. A late push from the Mountaineers powered by five straight points got the score within two points, 18-16. Cincinnati responded with a trio of kills, taking a dominate 21-16 lead. Green contributed the last four points for WVU, as her three straight kills made the score, 23-22. The Bearcats prevailed, taking the third set, 25-22.
Next, the Mountaineers return home to Morgantown, facing No. 11 Arizona State on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. ET, inside the WVU Coliseum. The match will feature a Weeknight Happy Hour deal, with beverages marked half off until first serve. The match will also serve as the Mountaineers Maniacs Night, with the first 200 students in attendance receiving an exclusive Maniacs giveaway.
