West Virginia Completes Second Day of WVU Invite

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished the second day of the WVU Invitational on Thursday at The Peak Health Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown.
The men's swimming and diving team is in second place with 1,195 points. The women's swimming and diving team is in fourth place with 1,054 points.
The evening began with the men's team placing second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:27.20). The women's team placed third after touching the wall at 1:43.05.
The first individual win of the evening came in the men's 400-yard individual medley. Redshirt senior Danny Berlitz was dominant, touching the wall at 3:48.39. He finished six seconds faster than the next closest swimmer in the event.
For the women's team, junior Gabriela Martin earned the first and only individual win of the evening. She placed first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.56) as sophomore Maddie Smutny touched the wall at 1:51.00 to place third.
Senior Roanoke Shirk had an impressive race on the men's side, placing third at 1:37.92.
To wrap up individual competition, sophomore Delaney Cox narrowly missed out on a victory in the 100 backstroke as she placed second (54.33). Senior Justin Heimes placed second (47.47) for the men's team.
The relay team comprised of Martin, Smutny, junior Olivia Busch and senior Miranda Kirtley earned the win in the women's 800 freestyle relay (7:25.72). The men's relay team comprised of Berlitz, Shirk, redshirt sophomore Chrisitan Simpson and freshman Nick Lugo placed second (6:30.87).
In the diving well, sophomore Owen Recker placed fourth on the men's 1-meter with 278.65 points, and junior Abigail Sullivan placed fifth on the women's 3-meter with 254.75 points.
The Mountaineers will finish the WVU Invitational on Friday. Prelims are scheduled for 10 a.m. EST and finals are set for 6 p.m.
