No. 8 Kansas Sweeps West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (8-14, 2-9 Big 12) was defeated in three sets, 3-0 by No. 8 Kansas on Saturday afternoon at the Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena in Lawrence, Kansas.
 
The Jayhawks took the sweep with scores of 18-25, 13-25 and 18-25, remaining undefeated in Big 12 play.
 
Senior outside hitter Hailey Green led West Virginia with 12 kills, while hitting .242%. Redshirt junior outside hitter Cassidy Tanton collected seven kills, while adding nine digs.
 
Junior middle blockers Laila Ibrahim and Chalina Lederer, alongside sophomore middle blocker Maddy McGath tallied three total blocks each.
 
Green kicked off the first set with a kill, as WVU led 1-0, early in the match. The Mountaineers would hold the lead until the score was tied at four. KU proceeded with a 6-0 scoring run, taking a 10-4 advantage. Ibrahim chipped in a pair of kills, as WVU trailed 18-12. A kill from McGath paired with an error from KU looked to slow the Jayhawks, as they held the 23-17 lead. Kansas continued, taking the first set with a kill, 25-18.
 
Kansas showed dominance at the beginning of the second set, with a 5-1 lead. A kill from freshman outside hitter Nina Svetina followed by a Jayhawk error got the Mountaineers within three points, trailing 9-6. Kansas chipped in a 5-1 run, leading by as many as seven points, 14-7. A service ace from McGath would seal a 3-0 West Virginia run, before three straight KU points made the score, 17-10. Kansas went on to close out the second set, 25-13 with five straight points.
 
An error from the Jayhawks tied the third and final set at one, kicking off the set. A 3-0 West Virginia run gave the Mountaineers the lead for the first time in the set, 7-6. The Mountaineers continued to hold the lead until the score was knotted at 12 all. A trio of Jayhawk points kept WVU at bay, as they trailed 15-12. A kill from Green looked to change the momentum for the Mountaineers, before a 3-0 Kansas run made the score, 19-14. The Jayhawks looked for victory as a 4-0 run made the win look eminent, before a kill from McGath would stop the Jayhawks at match point, 24-18. Kansas went on to close the final set with a kill, 25-18.
 
Next, West Virginia will travel to face Cincinnati on Nov. 7 in Cincinnati, Ohio. First serve is set for 11 a.m. ET, at the Fifth Third Arena.
