
Strong Finish Send WVU Past No. 3 TCU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team collected its eighth straight win of the season with a 4731-4725 result over No. 3 TCU on Saturday inside the WVU Shell Building at the WVU Rifle Range.
It marks the fifth-ranked opponent the Mountaineers have defeated this season and is second in the top five. The Mountaineers are now 10-3 all-time against TCU in a series that dates back to 2005. The win extends the Mountaineers' regular season win streak to 21 straight matches.
TCU led at the halfway point, after claiming smallbore by one point at 2348-2347. West Virginia won the match in air rifle, scoring seven more points than the Horned Frogs to a 2383-2376 margin.
For smallbore and air rifle, senior Gavin Barnick, sophomore Lauri Syrja, and Griffin Lake and freshman Camryn Camp served as counters for the match. Freshman Ashlyn Blake only counted in smallbore as Senior Natalie Perrin counted in air rifle.
Lake had a career day, finishing with career marks in air rifle and aggregate score and added a season high in smallbore. His 592 mark in smallbore led the Mountaineers and was good for second overall behind only TCU's Katie Zaun who finished with a 594. He scored 1190 to finish in second place overall after adding the second-best mark of the day in air rifle with a 598.
Blake finished in third place with an 1187. She hit a career-best 599 in air rifle to post the top score of the afternoon and added a 588 in smallbore.
Syrja posted an 1179 (585 SB – 594 AR) to finish in sixth as Camp finished just behind with an 1178 (582 SB – 596 AR). Barnick finished in eighth place with an 1177 (583 SB - 594 AR) and Maximus Duncan rounded out the Mountaineers inside the top 10 with a ninth-place finish. He scored an 1176 (579 SB - 597 AR) as his score in air rifle set a new career mark.
Perrin scored an 1174 (579 SB - 595 AR) as freshman Jacob Wisman was the final Mountaineer in action posting an 1172 (576 SB – 596 AR).
The match was the last for the Mountaineers in the fall. WVU will return to action after the first of the year when they welcome Navy to Morgantown on Saturday. January 18. The competition will take place at the WVU Rifle Range inside the WVU Shell Building.
