MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team clinched the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship crown on Friday afternoon at the Blue and White Courses in University Park, Pennsylvania.
After totaling 41 team points to capture first place, the Mountaineers clinched an automatic qualifying spot to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 23. West Virginia's 41 points marks the lowest team score earned by the program at a regional championship meet.
West Virginia's regional win marks the program's first since 2008 and coincides with the team's first regional win on Nov. 13, 2004, 20 seasons ago.
"We are so very happy and proud of what this entire team has been able to accomplish this year," said WVU coach Sean Cleary. It has been 20 years since our first team regional championship which also occurred at Penn State. While the names are different today, it was those past teams that helped lay the foundation for this moment."
Senior Ceili McCabe took first place, winning the meet for the third time in her career with a time of 19:11.2 in the women's 6k. With the time, McCabe broke the Blue and White Courses record, which was previously held by Sheila Reid of Villanova, 19:34.0, since 2010.
Freshman Joy Naukot finished next for the Mountaineers, claiming sixth place and All-Mid Atlantic Region honors with a time of 19:49.4. Redshirt senior Sarah Tait crossed the finish line next with a ninth-place finish and personal best time of 19:58.9. Additionally, Tait claimed All-Mid Atlantic Region accolades with her finish.
