MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University golf team closed out the Big 12 Match Play Championships with a highly-contested 3-2-0 victory over No. 5-seeded Colorado at The Clubs at Houston Oaks in Hockley, Texas, on Wednesday.
Four matches all finished 1UP with Todd Duncan and Max Green carding birdies on the final hole to lift the Mountaineers. Duncan defeated Brandon Knight while Green downed Ty Holbrook. Pierce Grieve never trailed in his match against Hunter Swanson to win 1UP. Kaleb Wilson fell to Freddy Eisenbeis, 1UP, and Carson Kammann was defeated by Justin Biwer, 5&3.
"What a great match today versus a very good Colorado team," coach Sean Covich said. "I'm so proud of our three seniors. For them to earn this victory in their final Big 12 Match Play tournament is something they will always remember. Pierce, Max and Todd played some outstanding golf today, and they were clutch in the big moments. Kaleb had an outstanding week for us going 4-1. He continues to play great golf. We still have a ton of work to do if we want to improve and play to our expectations, but this was a good week overall."
The Mountaineers finish the Big 12 Match Play Championships at 2-2-1 with wins over Colorado and UCF as well as a tie against No. 24-ranked Utah.
West Virginia will close out its fall season by hosting the White Sands Collegiate from Oct. 25-27 in Paradise Island, Bahamas.
