MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University golf team tied No. 7-ranked and 12-time National Champion Oklahoma State, 2.5-2.5, before falling to the Cowboys in a playoff tiebreaker at the Big 12 Match Play Championship in Salt Lake City on Wednesday.

The tiebreaker consisted of a five-count-five playoff on the 18^th hole, counting all five players' scores toward the team's total for that hole. On the tiebreaker hole (Par 5 No. 18), Oklahoma State went -6, while West Virginia totaled -4.

Due to the tiebreaker, West Virginia finished third at the Big 12 Match Play, marking the highest finish the Mountaineers have ever had in the event.

The event was shortened by one round due to rain on Tuesday. Oklahoma State and Arizona State were declared co-champions, while West Virginia and Texas Tech tied for third place.

It's the first time in Big 12 Match Play history that the Mountaineers went undefeated in the event. No. 12-seeded WVU defeated No. 5-seeded TCU (4-1), No. 13-seeded Baylor (3-2), and had ties against No.-1 seeded Oklahoma State (2.5-2.5) and No. 4-seeded Kansas (2.5-2-5).

Against Oklahoma State, Jack Michael gave WVU the first point of the day with a 4&3 win over Filip Fahlberg-Johnsson. The Huntington, West Virginia, native had six birdies on the day and became the first WVU golfer to go undefeated in Big 12 Match Play. Michael finished with victories over Oklahoma State, Baylor, TCU and Kansas.

Nick Turowski recorded WVU's second point on the day with a 5&4 win over No. 15-ranked Eric Lee. Turowski birdied the first five holes and finished with eight birdies against the Cowboys.

Sophomore Gabe Schmitz and Ethan Fang tied the fifth and final match. Fang represented the United States at the Walker Cup in 2025 and 2026 and played in both the Masters and U.S. Open in 2026.

Aidan Dortch fell to No. 7-ranked Preston Stout, 3&2, and Ryan Leach dropped a 3&2 match to Gaven Lane.

The Mountaineers will next be in action to close out the fall season on Nov. 4-5 at the Pearl at Kalauao Invitational in 'Aiea, O'ahu, Hawai'i.
