MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team claimed victory at the Live in Lou Classic on Saturday morning in Louisville, with a team score of 36 points.
Senior
Ceili McCabe crossed the finish line in first place, with a personal best time of 16:06.0 in the women's 5k, breaking the meet record. Freshman
Joy Naukot finished next, with a career best finish of 16:25.9, claiming fourth place in her collegiate debut.
"Ceili and Joy were quite aggressive today as they took on a very good group in the front pack," said WVU coach Cleary. "This was Ceili's first cross country race since 2022 in a West Virginia uniform, and Joy's first ever cross country race."
Graduate student
Madison Trippett rounded out the top ten for the Mountaineers, earning an eighth-place finish with a time of 16:58.3.
Next, redshirt junior
Emily Bryce and redshirt senior
Sarah Tait claimed 10
th and 11
th place, with times of 17:04.7, and 17:12.0, respectively.
"The trio of Bryce, Tait and Trippett moved through the race with great poise," added Cleary. "Those three athletes, alongside their teammates will be extremely important as we head towards the championship part of the season."
Additionally, sophomores
Tecla Lokrale and
Eva Rinker added personal best times of 17:35.6, and 18:53.2. While redshirt junior
Aubrie Custer ran for a career best time of 19:08.8.
Redshirt juniors
Zara Zervos and
Kase Torchia also added team points for West Virginia.
Next, the Mountaineers will compete at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on Oct. 12 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The race will be held inside Schenley Park at 10:45 a.m. ET.
