
Greeny Captures First Big 12 Win Over UCF

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (7-11, 1-6 Big 12) defeated UCF on Wednesday night, 3-1 inside of the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown. The win earned WVU coach Jen Greeny's first Big 12 victory.
The Mountaineers captured the match with scores of 20-25, 25-20, 25-15 and 29-27. West Virginia held the Knights to a .266 hitting percentage, while totaling 55 kills, 47 digs, 10 aces and eight blocks.
West Virginia was once again led by senior outside hitter Hailey Green, who tallied 19 kills on a .581 clip. Redshirt junior outside hitter Cassidy Tanton added 17 kills, while collecting eight digs.
Graduate student setter Lauren DeLo dished out a double-double, with a season high 44 assist paired with 12 digs.
Defensively, WVU was led by graduate student libero Sydney Reed who counted 15 digs on the night. Junior middle blocker Laila Ibrahim was a strong force in the middle, collecting seven total blocks.
West Virginia started off the match with an early lead, 2-0 after a kill from Tanton and service ace from junior outside hitter Quincey Coyle. The Mountaineers pushed ahead, leading 15-11 at the media time out. The Knights chipped in four straight points, tying the score at 15 all. UCF took momentum, using a 6-1 run to make the score 21-16. WVU attempted to clap back, as the squad got the score within three, 22-19. UCF proceeded, taking the first set, 25-20.
The Mountaineers once again led early in the second set, 2-1. The score went on to be knotted four times, before a kill from Green would give WVU the 7-6 advantage. A 5-1 Mountaineer run shifted the set, as West Virginia led, 14-8. The Knights chalked up a late 3-0 run, as they trailed 21-16. Green dropped down the final kill of the set, as WVU closed out the second, 25-20.
Coyle kicked off set three with an ace, as WVU led once again, 1-0. The Mountaineers went on to lead by as many as seven points, with Coyle behind the service line, 13-6. West Virginia fared too much for the Knights, as UCF chipped in two errors giving the Mountaineers a large, 23-13 lead. A kill from Tanton is all it took to slam the door on set three, 25-15.
The Knights looked for redemption in set four, storming away with a 7-1 advantage to start the set. A pair of kills from Green and sophomore middle blocker Maddy McGath, alongside an error from UCF let WVU trail, 9-6. UCF went on another run, taking a dominant 20-12 lead. West Virginia had an answer, using a 5-0 run, which included three straight aces from Coyle to tie the score at 22. The fourth set saw four match points, before an error from UCF gave West Virginia the final set, 29-27.
Next, West Virginia will face Colorado on Oct. 23. First serve is slated for 9 p.m. ET, inside of the CU Events Center in Boulder, Colorado.
