
No. 8 Kansas Defeats West Virginia on Thursday Night

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (6-10, 0-5 Big 12) was downed in three sets, 3-0 by Kansas on Oct. 10 inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown. The Jayhawks claimed victory with scores of 20-25, 18-25 and 17-25.
West Virginia was led offensively by senior outside hitter Hailey Green and redshirt junior outside hitter Cassidy Canton, as the duo collected 11 kills apiece.
Defensively, junior middle blocker Laila Ibrahim led the floor with six total blocks, while graduate student libero Sydney Reed collected 14 digs.
A kill from sophomore middle blocker Maddy McGath tied the match early in set one, 1-1. The score went on to be tied eight more times, as a kill from the Jayhawks knotted the set at 12. A 3-0 West Virginia scoring run gave the Mountaineers their biggest lead of the set, 15-12. KU responded with a trio of points, making the score 16 all. Kansas persisted, adding four unanswered points, taking a 20-17 lead. The Jayhawks went on to take the first set with a 4-1 run, 25-20.
Kansas started off the second set hot, with a 4-0 advantage. A pair of kills from Green looked to spark the West Virginia offense, as they Mountaineers trailed, 11-6. Kansas stormed on, taking the largest lead of the match, 15-6. A late trio of West Virginia points chipped into KU's 20-14 lead. A kill from Green and a Jayhawk error marked the last two points of the set for WVU, as Kansas went on to take the second, 25-18.
A block from Ibrahim and Tanton lit up the crowd as West Virginia took the first point of the third set. McGath dropped down a big swing, as the Mountaineers trailed by one, 6-5. Kansas went on with a 4-0 run, taking a 10-5 lead. Kills rained in from Tanton, as the Jayhawks looked to storm away with a 17-10 advantage. KU continued to dominate, taking the third and final set, 25-17.
Next up, West Virginia continues its home stand, hosting Kansas State on Oct. 13, inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. ET, as Sunday's match serves as the Brunch with the Mountaineers game. The first 100 fans will receive free donuts, coffee, and juice. Fans are encouraged to stay after the match for post-game autographs at the Gold Gate.
