
Quinerly Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Following a career-best scoring performance, junior guard JJ Quinerly of the West Virginia women's basketball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
The Norfolk, Va., native scored a career-high 31 points in the 84-78 win over Iowa State. She added a team-high six rebounds and five steals and three assists. She is just the third player in program history to reach the stat line.
Quinerly broke the 30-point mark for the second time this season and her career.
West Virginia will play host to UCF on Tuesday, Jan. 30, at the WVU Coliseum. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. ET.
This Week in Women's Basketball: The Mountaineers are set for two contests this week … WVU opens play with a 7 p.m. ET meeting with UCF on Tuesday, Jan. 30, at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown … the Mountaineers then hit the road for a matchup with BYU in Provo, Utah, at the J. Willard Marriott Center … tipoff is set for 6 p.m. ET.
Last Week in Women's Basketball: West Virginia collected its fourth straight Big 12 win … the Mountaineers defeated Iowa State, 84-78, on Jan. 27, at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown … JJ Quinerly produced a career-high 31 points in the win … she added six rebounds, five steals and three assists.
Notes: Quinerly is just the third player in program history to reach those numbers in a game ... West Virginia leads the nation in steals per game (14.8) and turnover margin (9.44) … the Mountaineers finished the nonconference schedule with a perfect 11-0 mark … it is just the sixth time in program history a team has finished with a perfect nonconference record.

Last Week in Rifle: West Virginia collected two wins to move to a perfect 12-0 on the season … the Mountaineers used a score of 4739 to defeat No. 11 Akron (4696) and No. 13 Navy (4697) … WVU packed the top of the leaderboard with seven inside the top 10 … senior Molly McGhin won the overall title with an 1188 … McGhin and freshman Lauri Syrja posted the highest score in air rifle with a 599 … senior Matt Sanchez produced the highest smallbore mark with a 593 … the Mountaineers notched a 2329 in air rifle to match a program record at the event.
Notes: WVU has defeated 12 teams ranked inside the top 16 of the CRCA Poll and are a perfect 12-0 overall and 5-0 in the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) … the Mountaineers hold the highest aggregate (4742.4) and smallbore (2361.8) average in the nation and sit third in air rifle (2380.5).
This Week in Swimming and Diving: West Virginia is off until the 2024 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships ... the championships will be held at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown from Feb. 27-March 2.
Last Week in Swimming and Diving: The West Virginia men's swimming and diving team (2-2, 1-0 Big 12) defeated Villanova on senior day, 234-66 ... the women's swimming and diving team (2-3, 1-1 Big 12) defeated Villanova, 173.50-125.50, and beat Iowa State, 191-108.
Notes: Senior Sara Haggerty set a new program record on the women's platform with a final score of 287.85 ... this feat comes after she set a program record on the women's platform against Pitt on Jan. 13 ... senior Danny Berlitz led the men's team, winning two individual events ... Berlitz finished first in the 200-yard backstroke (1:45.64) and the 400-yard individual medley (3:48.60) ... he also was part of the relay team that won the 200-yard medley (1:28.00) ... senior Justin Heimes won the men's 100-yard backstroke (48.73) and placed third in the 200-yard backstroke (1:49.25) ... he was part of the relay team that won the 200-yard medley, and the relay team that won the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:04.87) event ... in the men's 1,650-yard freestyle, the Mountaineers had the top three swimmers ... senior Ivan Puskovitch won the event with a 15:26.34, senior William Mullen placed second (15:34.22) and freshman Trevor Hudson finished in third (15:58.35) ... sophomore Ada Szwabinska led the women's team, winning two individual events ... she placed first in the 50-yard freestyle (22.90) and the 100-yard freestyle (50.60) ... Szwabinska was part of the relay team that won the 200-yard medley (1:41.37) and the relay team that won the 400-yard freestyle (3:25.09) event ... sophomore Mia Cheatwood won the women's 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.15) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:11.92) ... she was part of the relay team that won the 200-yard medley and the relay team that won the 400-yard freestyle event.
This Week in Tennis: West Virginia will play host to Indiana on Friday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. ET and VCU on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 11 a.m. ... both matches will be at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown.
Last Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers defeated Marshall in Huntington, W.Va., 4-3, on Jan. 27 ... West Virginia beat Virginia Tech, 4-3, in Blacksburg, Va., on Jan. 28 ... the win against Virginia Tech was the program's fifth all-time against the Hokies and the first since 1992.
Notes: Freshman Maya Bordereau has yet to lose a singles match for West Virginia as she is 4-0 ... graduate student Love-Star Alexis defeated Virginia Tech's No. 101 Katie Andreini ... it was her first ranked win of the season ... in just her second singles match of the season, junior Tatiana Lipatova secured the win for WVU over Virginia Tech, winning 7-6, 3-6, 6-1 ... junior Camilla Bossi appeared in her first matches of the season for the Mountaineers against Marshall and Virginia Tech ... she finished 1-1 in singles play with a win against the Hokies.
This week in Indoor Track & Field: West Virginia will compete at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge in University Park, Pa., which is slated for a 10:30 a.m. ET start on Saturday, Feb. 3.
Last week in Indoor Track & Field: West Virginia continued the 2024 season at the Penn State National Open on Jan. 26-Jan. 27 … redshirt junior Cassandra Williamson finished second in the women's 600-meter race, claiming the top spot on WVU's all-time list with a 1:30.08 finish … redshirt senior Mikenna Vanderheyden finished fifth overall in the 1,000-meter with a time of 2:49.15 … freshman Lily Haught ran a time of 25.51 in the 200-meter dash, while classmate Izayah Everett set a personal best, racing for a 25.66 finish … redshirt senior Sarah Tait made her indoor debut, placing fifth in the 3,000-meter invitational run with a time of 9:20.45 … the 4x400 meter relay, consisting of Haught, Williamson, freshman Cate Pickering and freshman Kishay Rowe placed fifth in the event with a 3:46.13 finish … on the field, freshman Sophia Ludwig made her collegiate debut in the women's triple jump, leaping for 12.05 meters to capture fifth place … in the high jump, senior Abigale Mullings finished seventh overall, jumping for 1.70 meters.
Notes: Senior Ceili McCabe opened her indoor season at the Dr. Sander Invitational Columbia Challenge in New York, N.Y. … McCabe set a program record in the women's mile with a time of 4:30.24, which currently ranks No. 2 in the NCAA so far this season.
This Week in Gymnastics: The Mountaineers prepare to open their Big 12 Conference slate against league newcomer BYU on Friday, Feb. 2 … action inside the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah, is tabbed for 9 p.m. ET.
Last Week in Gymnastics: WVU used a season-high score of 49.2 on floor exercise to tally a 194.825-194.05 win over Kent State in Kent, Ohio, on Jan. 28 … West Virginia also performed well on vault with a 48.875, while the squad tallied scores of 48.625 on balance beam and 48.075 on the uneven bars … freshman Jurnee Lane's career-high 9.925 also highlighted floor rotation … in the all-around, fifth-year senior Abbie Pierson took the top spot in the final standings with a season-high matching 39.175 total on all four events … sophomore Emma Wehry made her career debut in the all-around on Sunday, competing on floor for the first time and earning a 38.575 total for second place … Wehry took home first place on vault (9.875) and bars (9.8), while Pierson and Lane secured first place on beam (9.85) and floor (9.925), respectively … additionally, Pierson also finished in a tie for second on vault (9.85), and Brown secured a second-place finish on beam (9.8).
Notes: Four of WVU's five scoring gymnasts scored a 9.8 or higher on floor to help the Mountaineers earn their first event score of 49.0+ this season … Lane's 9.925 on floor marked West Virginia's first 9.9+ score of the season … West Virginia had five performances that matched or set individual career highs on Sunday, while six Mountaineers tallied new or matching season highs … the 2024 campaign marks the 50-year anniversary of the Mountaineer gymnastics program, as West Virginia will celebrate 50 years of varsity status, dating back to 1974 … WVU sits at No. 47 overall in the third week of the Road to Nationals rankings … Pierson returns for her fifth season of competition at West Virginia, as she leads the team with 52 meets competed in her career.
This Week in Wrestling: West Virginia closes out Big 12 action against No. 4 Iowa State on Friday, Feb. 2, at 8 p.m. ET at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa, and No. 22 Northern Iowa on Sunday, Feb. 4, at 3 p.m. at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in its final road trip of the regular season.
Last Week in Wrestling: WVU went 1-1 over the weekend … the Mountaineers began with a 30-6 loss to No. 2 Missouri in front of 1,327 passionate fans packed inside the WVU Coliseum on Jan. 26 … the attendance surpassed the team's dual in 2015 against No. 8 Iowa State (1,207) for the seventh spot in program history … back-to-back decisions by redshirt sophomore Jordan Titus and true freshman Ty Watters over a pair of ranked opponents highlighted the dual for the Mountaineers … Titus went wire-to-wire with No. 21 Josh Edmond at 141 pounds, where he eventually secured the victory after sealing an 11 second advantage of riding time in the tiebreaker ... Watters added a 6-1 decision over No. 11 Logan Gioffre for his 18th overall win of the season and fourth over a ranked wrestler … senior Peyton Hall, ranked No. 9 in the country at 165 pounds, met No. 1 Keegan O'Toole in the showdown of the night … Hall scored two early takedowns to a hold 6-2 lead, but O'Toole came back with two of his own to escape with a 8-7 win … the No. 20 Mountaineers closed out the weekend with a 40-3 win over Morgan State inside Talmadge L. Hill Field House on Jan. 28 … they claimed three technical falls in three of the first four matches of the day to jump out to a 15-3 lead and never looked back from that point, scoring 25 unanswered points in the final six bouts of the contest.
Notes: WVU stands at 9-3 overall and 24-3 in the last four years against nonconference opponents … eight members of the squad appear in the first NCAA coaches' ranking for the 2024 Division I Wrestling Championships, including No. 31 Jett Strickenberger (125), No. 10 Jordan Titus (141), No. 7 Ty Watters (149), No. 31 Caleb Dowling (157), No. 9 Peyton Hall (165), No. 15 Brody Conley (174), No. 29 Dennis Robin (184) and No. 31 Michael Wolfgram (HWT) … this is the first of four rankings to determine the 330 wrestlers across 10 weight classes who will clash for a spot on the podium from March 21-23 at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City.
