Tait Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt Senior Sarah Tait of the West Virginia University cross country team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
 
Tait finished second overall in the women's 6k Crimson Race on Sept. 23 at the Lock Haven Invitational in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, held at the West Branch Cross Country Course.
 
In her first competition as a Mountaineer, the redshirt senior broke the West Virginia record at the course at well as the meet record with a time of 20:14.4. The course record was previously held by Megan Metcalfe with a time of 20:19, since 2003.
 
The Mountaineers return to the grass on Saturday, Sept. 30 for the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The race will be held at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course and is slated for 11:45 a.m. ET.
 
This Week in Women's Soccer: West Virginia hits the road for a two-game swing through the state of Texas … up first, the Mountaineers travel to Austin to take on No. 14 Texas on Thursday, Sept. 28 … kickoff at UT's Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field is tabbed for 8 p.m. ET … WVU then caps the week against Big 12 Conference newcomer Houston on Sunday, Oct. 1 … the match against the Cougars is slated for 2 p.m., at the Carl Lewis International Complex in Houston.
 
Last Week in Women's Soccer: WVU split a pair of matches last week, first topping Iowa State, 1-0, on Sept. 21, before falling, 5-1, to TCU on Sept. 24 … in the match against Iowa State, fifth-year senior midfielder Maya McCutcheon found the back of the net in the 76th minute to lift West Virginia over the Cyclones … senior midfielder Isabel Loza earned the assist on the goal, the first of her career … the Mountaineers completed the week with the loss to TCU, with their lone goal in the match coming from sophomore forward Taylor White … junior forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran was credited with the assist.
 
Notes: McCutcheon's goal against Iowa State was credited as the game winner, the first game-winning goal of her career … with the win, WVU remained undefeated all-time against the Cyclones … fifth-year senior goalkeeper Kayza Massey and the Mountaineer defense notched their fourth shutout of the season against ISU … White's goal against TCU marked her team-leading fifth of the season, while Heredia-Beltran's assist was her team-best fourth of the year.
 
This Week in Men's Soccer: West Virginia hits the road for two matches … the Mountaineers will take on UNC Greensboro on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. E.T. before heading to Atlanta to battle Georgia State in a Sun Belt contest on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m.
 
Last Week in Men's Soccer: The Mountaineers went 1-0-1 this past week to remain unbeaten this season at 6-0-2 … WVU opened the week with a 1-0 victory on Sept. 19, against Dayton … redshirt senior Sergio Ors Navarro scored the lone goal of the contest, his second of the season … Thomas Decottignies collected the assist on the goal … senior Jackson Lee made four saves to earn his fifth shutout of the season … on Sept. 22, West Virginia and Georgia Southern played to a scoreless draw … the Mountaineers outshot the Eagles, 20-2, including a 7-0 advantage in shots on goal.
 
Notes: The Mountaineers reached their highest ranking in program history at No. 2 in the United Soccer Coaches poll … it is the second time in three years that the Mountaineers have been unbeaten through eight games with the streak reaching 10 in 2021 … Jackson Lee has six shutouts on the season, surpassing his total of four from 2022 ... the Mountaineers reached the 20-shot plateau for the first time this season against Georgia Southern.
 
This Week in Volleyball: West Virginia (6-8) returns Wednesday, Sept. 27, for a Big 12 matchup against Kansas State at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown ... first serve is slated for 6 p.m. ET. ... the Mountaineers close out the week on Saturday, Sept. 30, against Chicago State at 1 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum … fans who are not able to attend to can follow live at WVUsports.com or on ESPN+.
 
 
Last Week in Volleyball: WVU opened conference play on Sept. 21, and Sept. 22, playing host to No. 25 Iowa State at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown … West Virginia fell in both matches in three sets … junior Hailey Green led the team with 17 kills on Friday night and hit for .455 … fifth-year Camilla Covas collected 12 digs on Sept. 22, paired with sophomore defensive specialist Samiha Foster with seven.
 
Notes: West Virginia ranks No. 26 nationally in kills per set with 13.78 … the Mountaineers also rank 44th overall in assists per set with 12.54.\
 
This Week in Cross Country: West Virginia will head to the Paul Short Run on Saturday, Sept. 30, hosted by Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, ... the race will be held at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course and is slated to start at 11:45 a.m.
 
Last Week in Cross Country: The Mountaineers competed at the Lock Haven Invitational in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 23 ... redshirt senior Sarah Tait finished second overall with a time of 20:14.4 in the women's 6k Crimson Race … other scoring runners were redshirt sophomore Zara Zervos with a time of 22:26.4 and redshirt sophomore Aubrie Custer with a time of 23.09.3.
 
Notes: Tait set a West Virginia record at the West Branch Cross Country Course with her 20:14.4 finish, the record was previously held by Megan Metcalfe, set in 2003 with a time of 20:19 … Zervos and Custer also set career-best performances with their finishes this weekend.
 
This Week in Tennis: West Virginia is off this week before hosting the Martha Thorn Invitational in Morgantown from Oct. 6-8.
 
Last Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers competed in the Thunder in the Mountains in Charleston, West Virginia from Sept. 22-24 ... during the three-day event, WVU collected 18 wins, winning six doubles and 12 singles matches. 
 
Notes: The Mountaineers are led by a veteran group with two graduate students, one senior, three juniors and a redshirt sophomore ... graduate student Love-Star Alexis transferred from Middle Tennessee State during the offseason after compiling 89 career wins for the Blue Raiders ... head coach Miha Lisac named a new assistant coach for the upcoming season, as Calvin Song joins the program after spending the last three seasons at Fresno State.
