
West Virginia Splits Home Opener at Mountaineer Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University volleyball team (5-6) split the first day of the Mountaineer Invitational on Thursday, Sept. 14 at the WVU Coliseum.
West Virginia fell to Old Dominion Thursday morning in three sets, followed by a 3-0 sweep over North Dakota State.
"I thought we competed much better tonight against North Dakota State," said WVU coach Reed Sunahara. "I'm happy with the way we bounced back, we still have a lot of work to do but it was a good performance from our players."
West Virginia fell in the first match of the day to Old Dominion. The Monarchs took the match in three sets with scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-23. The Mountaineers took charge in set three, leading by as many as four points before Old Dominion struck back with a four-point scoring run to the match.
The Mountaineers put down 47 kills compared to Old Dominion's 32. Junior middle blocker Hailey Green and freshman middle blocker Maddy McGath added 11 kills each. Redshirt senior setter Lauren DeLo added 37 assists.
West Virginia looked for revenge in the nightcap against North Dakota State, capturing the three-set sweep over the Bisons with scores of 26-24, 25-16 and 25-23.
The Mountaineers started off hot, with a service ace from sophomore defensive specialist Samiha Foster. North Dakota State struck back, tying the set up 19-19 before West Virginia closed it out with three consecutive kills by Green.
The Gold and Blue dominated in set two, leading by as many as 10 points. Sophomore middle blocker Tierney Jackson sealed set two with a thrilling kill.
Set three was a back-and-forth brawl for both teams, with the score being tied 10 different times. West Virginia prevailed in the end, with a kill from Green and a North Dakota State error.
Green led the team with 16 kills, followed by sophomore outside hitter Bailey Miller with 10, respectively.
West Virginia collected 43 kills, 39 assists, 35 digs and held North Dakota State to .151 in hitting.
The Mountaineers returns on Friday, Sept. 15 for the second day of the Mountaineer Invitational. West Virginia will face Robert Morris at 6 p.m. ET, at the WVU Coliseum. All matches will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. Live streaming and live stats can be found at WVUsports.com.
