
Mountaineers Defeat Robert Morris in Four-Set Thriller

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University volleyball team (6-6) defeated Robert Morris (3-8) in a 3-1 victory on Friday, Sept. 15, at the WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers won sets one, three and four with scores of 34-32, 25-13 and 25-13.
The first set was an all-out brawl for both teams, with the score being tied 15 different times. West Virginia sealed the set win with back-to-back kills from sophomore outside hitter Bailey Miller and junior outside hitter Hailey Green.
Robert Morris grabbed its first set win of the tournament in set two, with a score of 25-21. The Colonials went on two different four-point scoring runs throughout the second.
West Virginia stormed over Robert Morris in the third set, leading by as many as 12 points. Freshman middle blocker Emma Beretich and freshman defensive specialist Emma Winter contributed greatly to the Mountaineers cause in set three. Beretich and Winter added two assisted blocks, shutting down the Colonial's offense.
"I thought Emma Beretich and Emma Winter came in the third set and gave us a spark," said WVU coach Reed Sunahara. "It was a good win leading us up to next week's Big 12 opener."
The fourth set started off with three consecutive kills from Miller, Winter and freshman middle blocker Maddy McGath. West Virginia went on to close out the match with a kill from freshman setter Katie Kolar.
Fifth year senior Camilla Covas set a career high with 30 digs, surpassing her previous record of 27 against the College of Charleston on Aug. 26.
McGath set a career high with 17 kills against Robert Morris.
West Virginia combined for 91 digs, 53 assists and 56 kills.
Covas and McGath were named to the Mountaineer Invitational All-Tournament team.
The Mountaineers return home on Thursday, Sept. 21, for the Big 12 opener against Iowa State. The match will feature a trucker hat giveaway to the first 250 fans in attendance. The match will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. Live streaming and live stats can be found at WVUsports.com.
