Caldeira Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore Marcus Caldeira of the No. 10 West Virginia University men's soccer team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week presented by University Apartments.

The highlight of the year came on Sept. 9, against No. 3 Portland as Caldeira scored with just three seconds left to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 victory over the Pilots at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

Earlier in the week, he found the back of the net against American in a 2-1 win in the nation's capital. He leads the nation with six goals and has scored in all five games this season.

The Mississauga, Ontario, native will look to keep his scoring streak alive on Friday, Sept. 15, as undefeated WVU heads to No. 6 UCF to open Sun Belt play. Kickoff from Orlando is set for 7 p.m. ET.

This Week in Men's Soccer: The 10th-ranked Mountaineers head to Orlando to take on sixth-ranked UCF on Sept. 15 at 7 p.m., to begin Sun Belt Conference action … both teams have not lost this year as WVU is 5-0 and the Knights are 4-0-1 … the two teams have met three times before with UCF holding a 1-0-2 series lead, but this will be the first meeting as members of the Sun Belt.

Last Week in Men's Soccer: West Virginia picked up two more wins against American and No. 3 Portland to improve to 5-0 on the season … against Portland, sophomore Marcus Caldeira scored with three seconds left in the game to take down the Pilots, 1-0 … junior Max Trethewey and senior Luke McCormick assisted on the goal … it was the fourth shutout in five games this season for the Mountaineers … earlier in the week, WVU defeated American on the road, 2-1, getting a goal each from Caldeira and junior Otto Ollikainen … freshman Constantinos Christou also collected an assist against the Eagles.

Notes: The Mountaineers went from unranked to No. 10 in the latest TopDrawerSoccer poll after the big week … the win over No. 3 Portland was the first win over a top-three team in the country for WVU since defeating No. 3 Pitt in Morgantown in 2021 … since 2006, the Mountaineers have defeated six top-three teams … WVU is one of just three teams in the country to be 5-0 along with Marshall and Marquette … it is the first time since 1975 that WVU has started a season with five consecutive victories… the shutout of Portland was made more impressive as the Pilots came into the contest as the nation's top offense, averaging 4.33 goals per game … Caldeira leads the nation with six goals … his six goals already surpass his total from last season, in which he led WVU with five … in five games this season, the Mountaineers have allowed just one goal … defender Carlos Hernando is the only field player to not leave the pitch this season, having played all 450 minutes.

This Week in Women's Soccer: West Virginia prepares to open Big 12 Conference play against league newcomer UCF on Thursday, Sept. 14, in Orlando, Florida … kickoff inside the UCF Soccer & Track Complex is tabbed for 6 p.m. ET.

Last Week in Women's Soccer: The Mountaineers recorded a pair of draws last week to complete nonconference play at 2-4-2 … WVU opened the week against Auburn, tallying a 1-1 draw against the Tigers on Sept. 7, in Morgantown … after a scoreless first half, sophomore forward Taylor White scored a goal in the second half to put West Virginia ahead … however, Auburn soon drew even to salvage the final draw … Auburn led the Mountaineers in shots, 11-7, and corner kicks, 6-3, while the teams were level with five shots on goal apiece … WVU capped nonconference play against Villanova on Sept. 10, settling for a 0-0 draw against the Wildcats … the Mountaineer offense tallied eight shots on the day, placing one on goal, as well as eight corner kicks … the WVU defense held Villanova to just two shots and one on goal, tallying its third shutout of the season.

Notes: WVU coach Nikki Izzo-Brown and daughter Sammie, a senior on the Auburn women's soccer team, competed against one another for the second time last week, as Sammie returned to her hometown to play in a collegiate soccer game for the first time in her career … fifth-year senior goalkeeper Kayza Massey and the Mountaineer defense earned their third shutout of the year against Villanova, while the squad also held an opponent to three shots on goal or fewer for the third time this season … White leads the WVU offense with four goals and nine points this year, while junior forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran paces the squad with three assists and 18 shots.

West Virginia fell in the first match of the week to Colgate in a five-set match with scores of 27-25, 25-20, 25-23, 28-26 and 15-12 … the Mountaineers went on to defeat Cornell on Sept. 8, in a four-set match with scores of 25-15, 25-23, 25-23 and 25-19 … West Virginia concluded the weekend with a three-set sweep over Albany with scores of 25-16, 27-25 and 25-14.

Notes: The Mountaineers are led by a veteran group with two graduate students, one senior, three juniors and a redshirt sophomore ... Love-Star Alexis transferred from Middle Tennessee State during the offseason after compiling 89 career wins for the Blue Raiders ... head coach Miha Lisac named a new assistant coach for the upcoming season, as Calvin Song joins the program after spending the last three seasons at Fresno State.

Last Season in Tennis: The Mountaineers had their best start to the spring campaign since 2010, starting 11-4 ... West Virginia also earned its first Big 12 victory since 2018 with a win against Kansas State ... three players finished the season with 30 or more wins, including Ting-Pei Chang, Michaela Kucharova and Momoko Nagato ... all three student-athletes return for the 2023-24 season ... the team was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team for the 10th consecutive year in the spring, and five members of the team were named ITA Scholar-Athletes for the 2023 season, including Nagato, Kucharova, Chang, Pei-Ju Hsieh and Maja Dodik.
