MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Ceili McCabe of the West Virginia University track and field team qualified for the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase final at the 2023 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.
"This is Ceili's third finals in as many years," coach Sean Cleary said. "This is a remarkable accomplishment in and of itself."
McCabe qualified with a time of 9:48.53 in the second heat of the semifinal on Thursday, June 8, at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. The 2023 National Championships are hosted by the University of Texas.
"It is time to get recovered and prepare to do it again in a few days," coach Cleary added.
The Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, native competes in the finals on Saturday, June 10, at 9:24 p.m ET. Live results and streaming are available at WVUSports.com. The race also will be available on ESPN2.
McCabe earned fourth overall in the semifinals. She shaved almost six seconds off her previous 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2023 NCAA East Preliminary Round, and she beat her time at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships by almost 24 seconds. Of note, her heat was the fastest of the two races, with the top five in her heat claiming the five fastest times in the event.
McCabe improved one spot from last season's 3,000-meter steeplechase semifinals at the National Championships, as she finished fifth with a time of 9:41.10 in 2022. She would go on to set her personal best in the finals with a time of 9:31.14 to earn third. Additionally, her 2022 time was the best in WVU program history and the sixth-best in the NCAA record book.
