
WVU Defeats Kansas State for the First Time in Program History

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team (10-3, 1-0 Big 12) defeated Kansas State for the first time in program history, 4-2, on Friday night in Morgantown.
"This what we've been working toward, so this is huge," said head coach Miha Lisac. "This group is really something special and this is a big step for us."
Friday evening's matchup against the Wildcats began with doubles play. Junior/sophomore pair Momoko Nagato and Michaela Kucharova claimed the first victory of the dual match with a 6-2 win over KSU's Rozalia Gruszczynska and Rosanna Maffei. Sophomore Camilla Bossi and senior Ting-Pei Chang defeated Vanesa Suarez and Manami Ukita in a tiebreaker, 7-6(3), to clinch the doubles point.
Fifth-year senior Pei-Ju Hsieh and redshirt freshman Maja Dodik fell to KSU's Florentine Dekkers and Aleen Quamar, 4-6.
Moving on to singles play, Kucharova defeated Suarez in two sets, 6-1, 6-4. Bossi fought through three sets to claim the point over Florentine Dekkers, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Chang fell in two sets to Maffei, 3-6, 4-6, while Dodik fell to Ukita in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 3-6.
Sophomore Tatiana Lipatova clinched the match for West Virginia in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, leaving Hsieh unfinished at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 1-3.
