
Mountaineers Open Big 12 Championship

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened competition at the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championship, at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.
The Mountaineers' four podium showings and new school record highlighted day one.
Sophomore Sarah Krusinski started the afternoon off strong for the Mountaineers with a first-place finish in the women's 1-meter diving consolation finals.
The women's 200 medley relay team of seniors Jacqueline McCutchan and Harna Minezawa and freshmen Mia Cheatwood and Ada Szwabinkska finished in third place with a time of 1:39.43, setting a new school record. The men's team's bronze-medal performance came next, as juniors Justin Heimes and Danny Berlitz, senior David Snider, and sophomore Conner McBeth finished in 1:26.42.
In the diving well, senior Owen Johns paced the men in the 1-meter finals, as he earned an eighth-place finish and a personal best score of 344.15.
In the final event of the of the evening, the 800 freestyle relay, the women's team of junior Abby Reardon, freshman Gabriela Martin, and sophomores Miranda Kirtley and Morgan Burton finished strong earning a silver medal with a time of 7:15.56. Reardon now holds the sixth-best 200 of all time for the Mountaineers. The men's 800 freestyle relay team of senior Roanoke Shirk, freshmen Max Nielsen and Jamin Harlan, and junior William Mullen finished with a time of 6:31.10, earning a bronze medal, as well as the third-best performance of all time for WVU. Shirk now holds the second-best 200 of all time for the Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers return to competition on Thursday, Feb. 24, for the second day of action at the Big 12 Championship. Thursday's swim prelims are set to begin at 11 a.m. ET, diving prelims are set to begin at 4:30 p.m., at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center, while finals action will commence at 7 p.m. ET.
