
Tucker Shoots a 600

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 3-ranked West Virginia University rifle team defeated the Virginia Military Institute to claim victory in its NCAA Qualifying Match by a score of 4741-4564, on Saturday, Feb. 18, in Lexington, Virginia.
"It was a solid team performance today, and at the same time, there were plenty of points we left out there," coach jon Hammond said. "It's nice tot come to a enw range and have that challenge, and they all managed to perform well at times."
Senior Mary Tucker shot a perfect 600 in air rifle to help lift the Mountaineers to victory. Saturday marked the third perfect 600 in her career. The Sarasota, Florida, native also shot a 585 in smallbore for an aggregate score of 1185.
"Anytime someone shoots a 600, it's incredibly impressive," coach Hammond said. "Mary had to work for it, but it was exciting for us to watch her finish her match. We're really pleased for her and also ready to work hard this week to prepare for hosting our conference championships."
Junior Molly McGhin notched 1187 points to lead the individual leaderboard. McGhin botched a 591 tied her career high in smallbore and shot a 596 in air rifle. Tucker earned second, while senior Malori Brown tallied a 1181 off 591 smallbore points and 590 air rifle points to take third.
"Both Molly and Malori showed some good resilience in how they finished their smallbore match," coach Hammond commented.
The Mountaineers claimed the top seven spots on the individual leaderboard. Junior Tal Engler followed Brown, racking up a 1181 with 587 smallbore points and 594 air rifle points. Her classmate Matt Sanchez secured fifth for WVU after a 578 in smallbore and a 598 in air rifle to record 1176 aggregate points. Sanchez tied his air rifle career best.
"Matt had a really strong air rifle match after his smallbore," Hammond added.
Senior Akihito Shimizu and sophomore Natalie Perrin rounded out the top seven for West Virginia. Shimizu notched a 583 in smallbore and a 593 in air rifle to sum to 1176. Perrin finished one point behind Shimizu, tallying 579 smallbore points and 596 air rifle points for a 1175.
West Virginia returns home for the GARC Championships in Morgantown on Saturday, Feb. 25 and Sunday, Feb. 26. Live stats for the conference championships can be found on WVUsports.com.
