MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team concluded the regular season at the Penn State Tune Up hosted by Penn State University at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track in University Park, Pennsylvania, on Friday, Feb. 17.
Junior
Mikenna Vanderheyden was crossed the finish line in the 600-meter with a time of 1:31.81. Vanderheyden's performance set a personal best and a WVU program record. The record was previously set by sophomore
Cassandra Williamson earlier this season.
"Mikenna's performance was one of the highlights of the winter," coach Sean Cleary said. "Cassandra ran a low-key early season 1:32.0 to set the standard. The mid-distance group has really had a nice winter. Mikenna continues to add great depth to this group. I am very happy with this result. This should be the tip of the iceberg for Mikenna."
The distance medley relay team consisting of redshirt senior
Mikaela Lucki, senior
Tessa Constantine, Williamson and sophomore
Ceili McCabe won the distance medley relay with a time of 11:00.51.
"DMR had another great run tonight," Cleary commented. "We entered the weekend with our sights on staying ranked high enough to qualify for the NCAA finals. Unfortunately, we ran a time that was one second off the school record and will more than likely have us sitting outside the NCAA meet. Time will tell."
Redshirt freshman
Emily Bryce and redshirt junior
Charlotte Wood competed in the mile at University Park. Wood ran the fastest mile in her first meet of the season, finishing in 4:48.39. Friday marked Woods fastest mile since the 2022 Boston University Valentine. Bryce crossed the finish line at 5:00.91 to take third. Bryce's effort is good enough for her personal best.
"It was great to see Charlotte back in the uniform," Cleary said. "This was a good steppingstone for Charlotte to get back on the roll that she finished cross country on. Emily also continues to improve. The last few weeks are beginning to show us that she has a temperament for racing. We now need to help her get fitter and fitter."
Freshman
Olivia Cress, sophomore Abigail Mullings and her classmate
Eden Williams competed in high jump at Penn State. Mullings and Cress notched heights of 1.65 meters. Friday marked Cress's personal best high jump performance. Williams notched a height of 1.60 meters, while her collegiate best is 1.62 meters.
Senior
Sada Wright secured fifth of 14 athletes in the weight throw with a toss of 16.80 meters, while redshirt senior
Hayley Jackson won the 800-meter with a time of 2:07.15. Sophomore
Megan Weaver also competed in the 800 and secured fourth, and her classmate
Katelyn Caccamo earned a pole vault height of 3.37 meters to take third for West Virginia.
"While Sada was a little bit off of last week's very impressive series of throws, Sada firmly believes that she has an even better performance in her," Cleary said. "Hayley continues a very consistent season over 800 meters while running her lifetime indoor best. Hayley has gotten herself into a very good position, as we embark on championship season. Our guess is that she has even more in her."
West Virginia begins the postseason campaign with the Big 12 Indoor Championships in Lubbock, Texas, on Friday, Feb. 24 and Saturday, Feb. 25. The championships are hosted by Texas Tech. Live Stats are available on
