MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Freshman
Joy Naukot of the West Virginia University track and field team earned NCAA Division I First Team All-American honors in the women's 10,000 meters on Thursday night at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Under the lights of Hayward Field, the freshman soared to a program best time of 31:34.34 along with a bronze medal finish.
Naukot earned the placement after tracking down a time of 1:08.96 during the last lap of the race, which marked the fastest lap time during the event.
The Kapenguria, Kenya, native becomes just the fourth Mountaineer in program history to earn a First Team All-American honor in the 10,000 meters and the only freshman ever to do so.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, graduate student
Sarah Tait qualified for the finals of the event after finishing in fourth place in the second heat. She boasted a personal best time of 9:37.06, earning a fifth-place finish overall.
Next, Tait will compete in the steeplechase final at 9:24 p.m. ET, on Saturday. The race can be viewed live on ESPN2, inside Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
