McCormick Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior midfielder Luke McCormick of the West Virginia University men's soccer team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week presented by University Apartments.

In the NCAA Quarterfinal contest against Loyola Marymount, McCormick scored the equalizing goal, the first of three unanswered goals by the Mountaineers as WVU advanced to the NCAA College Cup for the first time in program history.

McCormick has seven goals this season, including three in six postseason games. He also has three assists this season giving him 20 for his career, fourth-most in West Virginia history.

West Virginia will face Clemson in the NCAA College Cup Semifinal on Friday, Dec. 8, at Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky, at 6 p.m. E.T.

Last Week in Men's Soccer: The No. 5 Mountaineers defeated Loyola Marymount, 3-1, in the NCAA Quarterfinals at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Dec. 2… Luke McCormick, Sergio Ors Navarro and Yutaro Tsukada all scored for the Mountaineers … Jackson Lee made five saves in goal for WVU … Otto Ollikainen, Carlos Hernando, Ryan Crooks, Constantinos Christou and Lee all had assists for West Virginia.

This Week in Women's Basketball: The Mountaineers are set for two contests this week at the WVU Coliseum … WVU opens play with a 6 p.m. ET meeting with Penn State on Monday, Dec. 4, before closing out the week with a 2 p.m. contest against Delaware State on Sunday, Dec. 10 … on Sunday, WVU will honor classes '90 to '14 and all their accomplishments as part of the 50th Anniversary of WVU Women's Basketball … fans in attendance will receive a 50th anniversary commemorative giveaway.

Last Week in Women's Basketball: West Virginia played one contest last week, defeating St. Bonaventure, 90-50, on Dec. 2, inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown … four Mountaineers finished the afternoon in double figures, marking the second time this season four have finished with 10-plus points in a game …. junior guard JJ Quinerly led the way for WVU with 21 points ... it is the third time this season and the 10th time in her career she has scored over 20 points … sophomore guard Jordan Harrison scored 14 points while adding a team-leading eight assists, four rebounds and four steals … fifth-year senior Jayla Hemingway and junior guard Tirzah Moore both produced season highs with 16 and 13 points, respectively ... Hemingway also added four rebounds … redshirt junior guard Kyah Watson chipped in nine points and a season-high four steals.

Notes: The Mountaineers are a perfect 7-0 for the first time since the 2017-18 season … West Virginia has held its opponents to just 20.5% from 3-point range this season, which is the seventh-best mark in the country ... WVU adds top-10 rankings in scoring defense (50.4), steals per game (14.0), turnover margin (9.86) and turnovers forced per game (25.0) … Quinerly (17.0), sophomore guard Jordan Harrison (13.0) and fifth-year senior guard Lauren Fields (12.1) pace WVU's offensive effort as the trio average double-digit scoring per game … the trio all average over 2.5 steals per contest, serving as the only NCAA team in the country with three players averaging double figures and over 2.5 steals.

This Week in Wrestling: No. 21 West Virginia (4-1) travels to Colorado for a pair of Big 12 duals against Air Force on Friday, Dec. 8, at 9 p.m. ET, followed by Northern Colorado on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 3 p.m.

Last Week in Wrestling: The Mountaineers dropped their first dual of the season against No. 18 Oklahoma, 21-19, in the Big 12 opener over the weekend … the showdown eventually came down to the sixth meeting between redshirt seniors Michael Wolfgram of West Virginia and Josh Heindselman of Oklahoma at heavyweight … Wolfgram scored two takedowns to carry a 6-2 lead into the second period ... Heindselman responded with a takedown in the second to pull within two points and added an escape in the third to setup a race for the deciding takedown in the closing minute of the third (7-6) … the pair turned their back-and-forth into a scramble, where the Sooner received three points for a potential takedown in the closing seconds of the match that went to review ... the call was confirmed and Heindselman earned a 9-7 decision to secure the win ... No. 3 Stephen Buchanan registered a 18-3 tech. fall in the 197-pound bout to put his teammate in position for the win … WVU held a 19-13 lead with two matches to go but could not hang on as nationally-ranked Oklahoma scored eight points between the final two matches to seal the win … senior Peyton Hall, ranked No. 22 in the country at 165 pounds, caught No. 13 Cael Carlson in a pinning combination to cut OU's lead (13-6) to one … redshirt freshman Brody Conley added a decision at 174 pounds and redshirt junior Dennis Robin claimed an 11-0 major decision at 184 pounds to put WVU in front.

Notes: WVU stands at 4-1 overall to open the 2023-24 campaign … five members of the squad have registered double-digit wins – redshirt senior Michael Wolfgram (HWT – 11-3), seniors Caleb Dowling (157 – 12-3) and Peyton Hall (165 – 12-2), redshirt junior Dennis Robin (184 – 13-2) and redshirt freshman Brody Conley (174 – 10-1) … three members of the squad remain undefeated in duals – Robin, redshirt sophomore Jordan Titus and Conley (5-0) … Titus remains the only unbeaten Mountaineer as well with a 9-0 record.

This Week in Swimming and Diving: West Virginia is off until it hosts the Almost Heaven LC Open at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown from Dec. 16-19.

Notes: For the year, senior Danny Berlitz has won 17 individual events for the Mountaineers ... he also was a part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that set a pool record (2:58.62) at the Keating Aquatics Center against Cincinnati on Oct. 28.
