Broughton Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Max Broughton of the West Virginia University men's soccer team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week presented by University Apartments.

Broughton scored the game-winning goal in the 82^nd minute of a 2-1 victory against Vermont, sending the Mountaineers to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament. Standing in the box on a corner kick, he headed the ball past the keeper for his second goal of the season.

On the defensive side, Broughton has been part of a WVU back line that has allowed just one goal in 180 minutes of NCAA Tournament action.

The Rawtenstall, England, native will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 2, with the rest of the Mountaineers against Loyola Marymount in the NCAA Quarterfinals. Kickoff from Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is set for 2 p.m. ET.

Last Week in Men's Soccer: The Mountaineers defeated Vermont, 2-1, in the NCAA Round of 16 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … junior Max Broughton scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute, his second of the season … senior Yutaro Tsukada scored his 11th goal of the season in the victory … junior Frederik Jorgensen and sophomore Marcus Caldeira tallied assists … senior goalkeeper Jackson Lee made a season-high seven saves in goal.

Notes: It is the second time in three years the Mountaineers have advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals … WVU picked up its 16th win of the season against the Catamounts to set a new single-season program record … the previous record of 15 was set in 2006 when the current coaching staff of Dan Stratford, Andy Wright and Nick Noble all suited up for West Virginia … the Mountaineers and LMU have met once before, a 1-1 draw in 2005 in Morgantown … Tsukada has scored six goals in the last six games … Lee's seven saves is the most he has had in his two-year stint with West Virginia … Kyle Lehnert, Marcus Caldeira, Lee, Broughton, Carlos Hernando and Ryan Baer were all named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team.

This Week in Women's Basketball: The Mountaineers return home on Saturday, Dec. 2, when they welcome St. Bonaventure to the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown… tipoff is set for 2 p.m. ET against the Bonnies.

Last Week in Women's Basketball: West Virginia collected three wins at the Discover Puerto Rico Shootout in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to move to a perfect 6-0 on the season … WVU opened the event on Nov. 23, with a 54-51 win over George Washington … junior guard JJ Quinerly narrowly missed out on a double-double with a season-high 24 points and nine rebounds … on Nov. 24, WVU rolled past Charlotte 84-56 … sophomore guard Jordan Harrison notched her first career double-double with 18 points and 10 assists … on Nov. 25, the Mountaineers defeated Southern Illinois, 73-55 … Quinerly led WVU in scoring with 21 points … fifth-year senior Tavy Diggs recorded her first career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Notes: The Mountaineers are a perfect 6-0 for the first time since the 2018 season … WVU ranks second in the nation for three-point defensive percentage (17.8), seventh in steals per game (14.2), eighth in turnover margin (9.3), 12th in turnovers forced (24.0), 15th in scoring defense (50.5) and 25th in scoring margin (24.5).

Last Week in Volleyball: West Virginia volleyball (9-22, 2-16 Big 12) concluded the 2023 season on Nov. 25, after falling to Oklahoma, 3-2, in Norman, Oklahoma ... West Virginia hosted BYU on Nov. 22, and dropped a three-set match to the Cougars, 3-0.

This week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers concluded the 2023 campaign on Nov. 25 versus Oklahoma.

Notes: Junior outside hitter Hailey Green set the single-season record for a junior in kills with 418 after collecting 16 kills versus Oklahoma on Nov. 25 … the record was previously held by Stephanie Zolna, who collected 403 kills in 2004.

This Week in Wrestling: No. 21 West Virginia (4-0) collides with No. 18 Oklahoma (3-0) at the WVU Coliseum on Sunday, Dec. 3 … dual time is set for 2 p.m. ET.

Last Week in Wrestling: The Mountaineers did not compete.

Notes: WVU's matchup with OU marks the first time West Virginia will host a dual between two nationally ranked teams since 2016, when then-No. 24 WVU hosted No. 5 Oklahoma State (Jan. 17) and No. 9 Oklahoma (Jan. 19) in Morgantown for a pair of weekend showcases … the last time the Mountaineers were part of a ranked matchup took place last season, as then-No. 23 WVU traveled to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to battle No. 12 OSU … West Virginia is also 4-0 for the first time since 1993.

This Week in Swimming and Diving: West Virginia is off until it hosts the Almost Heaven LC Open at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown from Dec. 16-19.

Notes: For the year, senior Danny Berlitz has won 17 individual events for the Mountaineers ... he also was a part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that set a pool record (2:58.62) at the Keating Aquatics Center against Cincinnati on Oct. 28.

This week in Indoor Track & Field: West Virginia opens the season on Saturday, Dec. 2 at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston … the meet is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. ET.

Notes: The Mountaineers concluded the 2022-23 indoor season with 11 All-Big 12 performances … junior Ceili McCabe claimed the Big 12 Championship title in the 3,000-meter with a time of 9:21.21 … McCabe went on to compete at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Championship and finished sixth in the 3000-meter with a 9:16.26 finish and earned All-America honors for the second straight year.
