Box Score MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (2-1) fell to tournament host Penn State (2-0), 3-1, on Saturday evening, at the Penn State Classic in University Park, Pennsylvania.
WVU struck first in the match, and freshman outside hitter
Bailey Miller registered the first kill in set two, but the Nittany Lions took the first two sets.
The Mountaineers came out strong in set three, battling back and forth until they began to pull away when the score was tied, 8-8. A kill by freshman middle blocker/outside hitter
Tierney Jackson would clinch the third set for WVU.
Fifth-year senior outside hitter
Adrian Ell notched the first kill for WVU in set four, but Penn State would go on to take the set.
Ell led the Mountaineers with nine kills. Jackson joined Ell in tallying 10.5 points, good to lead the squad. Jackson also earned a team-high six blocks.
Redshirt freshman setter
Kamiah Gibson racked up 31 assists to lead West Virginia, while
registering a season-high two services aces.
With 10 digs each, junior outside hitter/defensive specialist
Skye Stokes and freshman defensive specialist/libero
Jordyn Schilling led the Mountaineers in the category.
Additionally, West Virginia recorded 37 kills and four service aces against the Nittany Lions.
Up next, WVU remains on the road, as it travels to Honolulu, Hawaii, for a three-match tournament from Sept. 1-4, against UCLA, Hawaii and Texas State. First serve against UCLA on Thursday, Sept. 1, is scheduled for 10:45 p.m. ET.
