MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Blue Squad won four-of-five rowing events, capturing Friday's WVU's Gold-Blue Regatta, on the Monongahela River, 277-156, posting the winning score for the second straight year.
"The Gold & Blue Regatta is certainly a fun event for our team, but it also importantly serves as a spectator-friendly home event for our family and friends and provides added racing experience for our younger team members," WVU Rowing Coach Jimmy King said. "We value this opportunity to provide a closer look at what a regatta day looks like for our team and appreciate everyone who came out to watch and cheer us on."
The first event of the day began not on the water but on the Erg Deck with a 2k erg competition from which the Blue Squad emerged with 160 points and a 50-point lead over the Gold Squad's 110.
The Blue Squad then went on to win four of five rowing events, scoring 277 points over the Gold Squad's 157. By the end of the day the Blue Squad amassed 437 points to capture the 2022 Gold & Blue Regatta and bragging rights for another year.
The Blue Squad secured wins in the Class/Year Tree 4+, Old/Young Tree 8+, Branch 4+ and the Tree 8+, while the Gold Squad won the Tree 2x and the non-scoring Coxswains 4+. The references to trees and branches refer to the family groups in which team members are placed during their first year on the team. There are two family trees in each squad and two branches to each tree.
However, in the year-long competition, the Gold Squad leads 3,783-3,597. The Blue Squad started the day trailing by 356 points in the overall year-long tally, 3,516-3,160. Following their dominant regatta day performance, the Blue Squad has narrowed their deficit to 186 points with more points to be earned over the last weeks of the semester.
The Mountaineer Rowing team returns to action on Sunday, April 24, at the George Mason Invitational in Fairfax Station, Virginia.
