MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team (1-1, 0-0 Big 12) is set for its third road trip of the season, as the Mountaineers travel to Virginia for a pair of matches against William & Mary and VCU.
WVU begins its two-match road trip on Saturday, Feb. 5, against W&M in Williamsburg. First serve from the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET. The Mountaineers then travel to Richmond, on Sunday, Feb. 6, to conclude its trip against the Rams. Sunday's match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. ET.
"This will be a good test for our team on the road," Mountaineer coach Miha Lisac said. "We have been preparing well for the upcoming matches and are looking forward to competing against two solid programs."
As the Tribe opens its spring slate on Saturday, the Mountaineers are seeking their first-ever dual-match victory over William & Mary. The contest marks the first time since 2017 that West Virginia will take on William & Mary.
During the fall, at Intercollegiate Tennis Associations (ITA) Regionals, doubles pair freshman Camilla Bossi and junior Ting-Pei Chang, topped the Tribe's Emma Fernald and Alisia Manolescu, 6-3. Bossi notched another WVU win over Fernald in singles play (7-6(5), 6-3), while freshman Michaela Kucharova fell to W&M's Hedda Gurholt (4-6, 3-6).
WVU and VCU are set to meet for the ninth time since 1990 on Sunday. The Rams hold an all-time advantage in the series, 5-3. In last year's regular-season contest, the Mountaineers rallied to defeat the Rams, 4-3, in Morgantown. During the fall campaign, sophomore Momoko Nagato claimed the two-set match against VCU's Anja Draskovic, 6-1, 6-0.
The Rams enter Sunday's contest with a record of 3-1, coming off three-match win streak against Temple (5-2), Elon (7-0) and Maryland (4-3).
West Virginia is coming off a dominating win at Cleveland State. The Mountaineers topped the Vikings, 7-0, on Sunday, Jan. 30, in Cleveland, Ohio. After claiming the doubles point, WVU swept CSU in singles play, winning all six matchups.
