Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's soccer team closed the 2022 regular season with a 3-1 win at Georgia Southern on Friday night at Eagle Field at Erk Park in Statesboro, Georgia.
Redshirt senior midfielder/defender Dyon Dromers, redshirt junior midfielder/defender Sergio Ors Navarro and fifth-year senior forward Adam Burchell all scored for the Mountaineers (6-6-4, 3-1-4 Sun Belt) in the victory. The result extended WVU's current unbeaten streak to seven matches.
Dromers tallied his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 28th minute to open the scoring. The Steensel, Netherlands, native fired a shot off a free kick to make it 1-0.
The Eagles (1-13-1, 0-7-0 Sun Belt) tied the match with a goal following a missed penalty kick in the 43rd minute. Then, just 59 seconds later, Ors Navarro got the Mountaineers back into the lead for good with a tally, his third of the year.
WVU led, 2-1, after 45 minutes.
In the second half, Burchell provided some insurance for West Virginia in the 60th minute with a goal to extend the lead to 3-1. The finish came after junior midfielder Ryan Crooks and junior forward Yutaro Tsukada connected to get WVU into scoring position.
With the helper, Tsukada has now recorded an assist in five of the last six matches, while Burchell registered his third goal of the month.
WVU reached double-figures in shots for the 14th time this season, finishing with a 10-8 advantage in the category, including 6-2 in the second half. In goal, junior goalkeeper Jackson Lee made two saves.
The win helped West Virginia improve to 2-0 all-time against Georgia Southern, with both wins coming on the road. Additionally, the Mountaineers have now scored 17 goals in their last six matches.
WVU finished the regular season with 13 points in conference action and will now wait for its Sun Belt Championship fate. Quarterfinal matches are set for Sunday, Nov. 6, at a site to be determined.
Of note, final seeding for the tournament will be determined with the conclusion of the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
