MORGANTOWN, W.VA. – Redshirt sophomore Abbey Yuhasz of the West Virginia University cross country team has been named the Big 12 Runner of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.
"Abbey's goal was to take last week's race and improve upon it," Coach Sean Cleary said. "Saturday demonstrated the progress that she has made over the last four weeks."
The Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, native led WVU at the Go Fast River Run with a third-place finish.
Yuhasz completed the 6k at Lock Haven University's West Branch XC Course with a time of 21:48.3, breaking her career best in the process.
Outrunning 161 athletes, Yuhasz was the first of five Mountaineers to cross the finish line.
Yuhasz is the eighth Mountaineer in program history to earn the conference's weekly honor and the third Mountaineer to earn the honor this season. Redshirt sophomore Megan Weaver earned the award on Oct. 11, after leading West Virginia at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational. This marks the first season WVU has had three different Big 12 Runners of the Week, with redshirt junior Ceili McCabe also earning the award on Oct. 4.
The Mountaineers return to action at the Big 12 Championships in Lubbock, Texas, on Friday, Oct. 28, at Chaparral Ridge Cross Country Course. The women's 6k begins at 10 a.m. ET.
