Shane Lyons announced the 2023 gymnastics schedule on Wednesday.
The Mountaineers' 2023 slate is highlighted by five home meets, including the 2023 Big 12 Gymnastics Championship. WVU is set to play host to the conference meet for the second time in the last three years, as well as the third time in program history.
West Virginia opens the season on the road for the second consecutive year, making the trek to Gainesville, Florida, for a Friday Night Heights SEC matchup at Florida on Friday, January 6. Ball State and Lindenwood also are set to join WVU at UF's Exactech Arena for the quad meet.
The Mountaineers return to Morgantown to open their home slate with a tri meet against Maryland and Kent State on Friday, Jan. 13, at the WVU Coliseum. The squad then returns to the road for a quad meet at Towson with West Chester and New Hampshire on Friday, Jan. 20, in Towson, Maryland.
WVU is set for its first and only home quad meet of the regular season on Sunday, Jan. 29, welcoming Big 12 foe Iowa State, Towson and Eastern Michigan to Morgantown. The Mountaineers next make the short trip to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to square off against rival Pitt on Friday, February 3.
West Virginia is set for a trip to Denver, Colorado, to compete against conference foe Denver on Sunday, Feb. 12, before returning to Morgantown to play host to Bowling Green in a dual meet on Sunday, Feb. 19.
From there, the squad sets off on a two-meet road trip, beginning with a Big 12 dual meet against Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma, on Friday, Feb. 24. The Mountaineers complete the weekend with a dual at Texas Woman's on Sunday, Feb. 26, in Denton, Texas.
WVU completes its regular-season home slate on Sunday, March 5, as it plays host to Pitt and Central Michigan in Morgantown. West Virginia wraps up the campaign with another two-meet road swing, first traveling to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for a matchup with LSU on Friday, March 10. The 2023 regular-season slate comes to a close on Sunday, March 12, in Piscataway, New Jersey, as the Mountaineers compete against Rutgers.
West Virginia then prepares to open the postseason and play host to the 2023 Big 12 Championship, which commences at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown on Saturday, March 18.
The 2023 NCAA Regional Championships are scheduled to take place from March 29-April 1, with UCLA, Denver, Oklahoma and Pittsburgh set to be regional hosts.
The 2023 NCAA National Championships are tabbed for April 13-15, in Fort Worth, Texas.
During the 2022 campaign, West Virginia recorded a 13-5 overall record, as well as a third-place finish at the Big 12 Championship, the squad's highest finish at the conference meet since 2017. WVU's season high of 196.650 at the Big 12 Championship marked its highest team score since 2018, as well as a program-best total at the conference championship.
The Mountaineers ranked inside the top 25 of the Road to Nationals Rankings on floor exercise every week during the regular season. The lineup debuted in the rankings at No. 4 on Jan. 17, marking the team's highest since at least 1998 in the Road to Nationals rankings. The last time the West Virginia appeared inside the organization's top 10 was in the final rankings of the 2001 regular season, when the squad was ranked No. 8 nationally on floor
Additionally, WVU also earned its 42nd regional championships berth all time in 2022, including its seventh consecutive qualification.
