McCabe Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After winning the Penn State National Open with a winning 6k time of 20:00.8 on Oct. 14, redshirt junior Ceili McCabe of the cross country team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
McCabe's time was good enough for sixth-best in Blue and White Golf Course history and second-best in Penn State National Open history. The Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, native has now won both races she has competed in this season.
McCabe looks to continue her momentum from her second first-place finish of the season, as the cross country team heads to Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, for the Go Fast River Run on Saturday, October 22. The race is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET.
This Week in Women's Soccer: West Virginia prepares to travel to the Sooner State for its final road test of the regular season … WVU begins the two-game road swing in Stillwater, taking on Oklahoma State on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 8 p.m. ET … the Mountaineers then complete the weekend at Oklahoma on Sunday, Oct. 23, with kickoff from Norman set for 2 p.m.
Last Week in Women's Soccer: WVU went 1-1 last week, falling to No. 22 Texas, 2-1, on Oct. 13, before earning a 3-1 victory over Baylor on Oct. 16 … opening a two-game homestand against the Longhorns, the Mountaineers went up early with a goal from sophomore forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran in the 22nd minute, but WVU was plagued by a red card and penalty-kick goal by Texas at 33:53 to tie things up going into the half … the visiting Longhorns found the back of the net again in the 58th minute to take the lead and the eventual win … UT led WVU in shots, 14-6, as well as shots on goal (8-3) and corner kicks (7-3) … senior goalkeeper Kayza Massey made five saves in the contest … the week ended on a high note when fifth-year senior Lauren Segalla tallied one goal and one assist to help the Mountaineers top Baylor, 3-1 … Segalla assisted WVU's first goal, scored by junior midfielder AJ Rodriguez, before scoring the second goal and eventual game-winner … the Salisbury, Connecticut, native's second-half tally was off a corner kick from Heredia-Beltran … sophomore defender Annika Leslie completed the scoring with an insurance goal straight from a corner kick in the 82nd minute.

This Week in Rifle: No. 2 West Virginia is off this week … the Mountaineers return to the range from Nov. 5-6, as they play host to Alaska-Fairbanks, TCU and Kentucky for the inaugural WVU Fall Classic … the event will be held at the Bill McKenzie Rifle range inside the WVU Shell Building in Morgantown.
Last Week in Rifle: West Virginia picked up four wins from Oct. 15-16, after it defeated No. 2 Air Force and No. 19 UTEP in a pair of tri-matches over the weekend at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado … on Saturday, WVU won its first tri-match of the weekend with a team score of 4714, including match-bests in smallbore (2333) and air rifle (2381) … Air Force shot a 4682 (2320 in smallbore, 2362 in air rifle) to finish second, while UTEP finished with a 4564 (2247 in smallbore, 2317 in air rifle) to place third … all six Mountaineers who competed Saturday placed inside the top 10 of the overall leaderboard … West Virginia was led by senior Malori Brown, who led all shooters in aggregate (1183) and smallbore score (589) … WVU wrapped up the weekend by shooting a 4715 to earn its second tri-match win of the weekend … the Mountaineers topped both disciplines for the second day in a row, including a 2333 in smallbore and a 2382 in air rifle … Air Force placed second again with a team score of 4690 (2331 in smallbore, 2359 in air rifle), and UTEP came in third with a 4568 (226 in smallbore, 2302 in air rifle) … each Mountaineer shooter placed inside the top 10 on the match leaderboard for the second straight day, including juniors Becca Lamb and Molly McGhin, who claimed the No. 2 and 3 spots, respectively.

WVU swept all eight relays ... junior William Mullen secured WVU's first individual victory of the season ... the Fairfax Station, Virginia, native won the men's 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:26.45 ... the Mountaineers went on to sweep the rest of Friday's session ... on the women's side, junior Abby Reardon (200 free – 1:51.91), senior Jacqueline McCutchan (100 back – 56.37), freshman Mia Cheatwood (100 breast – 1:03.51), sophomore Mia Walters (200 fly – 2:04.41) and freshman Ada Szwabinska (50 free – 23.41) all took first in their respective events ... for the men, WVU saw individual victories from junior Roanoke Shirk (200 free – 1:41.22), junior Justin Heimes (100 back – 49.87), freshman Adam McDonald (100 breast – 57.61), freshman Álvaro Santiago (200 fly – 1:52.97) and sophomore Conner McBeth (50 free – 20.70) ... during Saturday's session, West Virginia swept all 16 events, starting with the 400 medley relay victories from both the men's and women's squad ... in the first individual swims of day two, McCutchan (women's - 49.73) and McBeth (men's 45.86) eached grabbed a victory for WVU in the 100 free ... the Mountaineers saw back-to-back-to-back freshmen victories, starting in the 200 breast with Cheatwood in the women's event (2:19.20), followed by McDonald in the men's (2:04.45) ... next in the women's 400 free, freshman Gabriela Martin touched first with a time of 5:01.78 ... the final individual victories came from Mullen (men's 500 free), Minezawa (women's 100 fly), senior DavidSnider (men's 100 fly), McCutchan (women's 200 IM) and freshman Jamin Harlan (men's 200 IM) ... over in the divng well, senior Owen Johns won both the men's 1-meter (297.68) and 3-meter (283.58) springboard ... sophomore Sarah Krusinski convincingly won the women's 1-meter (264.75) springboard, and took second on the 3-meter (258.08).
Notes: WVU has now reigned victorious of the West Virginia State Games in each of its 11 seasons ... the men have won the event every year, while the women have only been defeated once ... West Virginia had twenty-three different Mountaineers that earned a victory this weekend, including seven freshman ... Johns' 1-meter springboard score and Krusinski's 1-meter score were just shy of NCAA Zone A Qualifying scores ... following the matchup against Cincinnati, the Mountaineers travel to State College, Pennsylvania for the second dual meet against Penn State, on Nov. 4-6.
This Week in Rifle: No. 2 West Virginia is off this week … the Mountaineers return to the range from Nov. 5-6, as they play host to Alaska-Fairbanks, TCU and Kentucky for the inaugural WVU Fall Classic … the event will be held at the Bill McKenzie Rifle range inside the WVU Shell Building in Morgantown.
Last Week in Rifle: West Virginia picked up four wins from Oct. 15-16, after it defeated No. 2 Air Force and No. 19 UTEP in a pair of tri-matches over the weekend at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado … on Saturday, WVU won its first tri-match of the weekend with a team score of 4714, including match-bests in smallbore (2333) and air rifle (2381) … Air Force shot a 4682 (2320 in smallbore, 2362 in air rifle) to finish second, while UTEP finished with a 4564 (2247 in smallbore, 2317 in air rifle) to place third … all six Mountaineers who competed Saturday placed inside the top 10 of the overall leaderboard … West Virginia was led by senior Malori Brown, who led all shooters in aggregate (1183) and smallbore score (589) … WVU wrapped up the weekend by shooting a 4715 to earn its second tri-match win of the weekend … the Mountaineers topped both disciplines for the second day in a row, including a 2333 in smallbore and a 2382 in air rifle … Air Force placed second again with a team score of 4690 (2331 in smallbore, 2359 in air rifle), and UTEP came in third with a 4568 (226 in smallbore, 2302 in air rifle) … each Mountaineer shooter placed inside the top 10 on the match leaderboard for the second straight day, including juniors Becca Lamb and Molly McGhin, who claimed the No. 2 and 3 spots, respectively.
Notes: Of note, Brown tied her career high in aggregate score in Saturday's tri-match … West Virginia ranks No. 2 nationally in smallbore average (2335.75), No. 3 in aggregate average (4716.00) and No. 4 in smallbore average (2335.75) … senior Mary Tucker continues to lead the squad in aggregate average (1188.5), smallbore average (590.5) and air rifle average (598) … the Sarasota, Florida, native ranks No. 4 nationally in aggregate score, No. 6 in air rifle score and No. 7 in smallbore score … in the international circuit, junior Tal Engler, sophomore Natalie Perrin and Tucker continue to compete at the 2022 International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Championships in Cairo, Egypt, this week … the event is scheduled to run until Tuesday, Oct. 25 … Tucker has already picked up a pair of medals at this year's championships; winning a silver on Oct. 16, in the women's team air rifle event and a bronze in the women's 50-meter rifle prone event on Oct. 17.
This Week in Cross Country: West Virginia continues the 2022 campaign with the Penn State National Open in State College, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 22 … the women's 6k begins at 10:45 a.m. ET, at Penn State's Blue and White Golf Course.
Last Week in Cross Country: WVU competed at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Oct. 8 … redshirt sophomore Megan Weaver led the way for the Mountaineers, setting a new 5k career-best with a time of 19:36.2, finishing 15th … additionally, redshirt freshman Zara Zervos competed for the first time since the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational, earning a time of 20:17.4, good for 28th … freshman Grace Wu followed behind Zervos, setting a 5k career-best of her own with a time of 20:30.9 and finishing 42nd … redshirt freshman Kase Torchia rounded out the top four for WVU with a time of 20:42.9 to finish 53rd, respectively.
