MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 2-ranked West Virginia University rifle team shot a 4714 to defeat No. 2 Air Force (4682) and No. 19 UTEP (4564) on Saturday afternoon, at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The Mountaineers (4-0, 2-0 GARC) claimed both of the match relays, shooting a 2333 in smallbore and a 2381 in air rifle. Air Force came in second place in each discipline, with a 2320 in smallbore and a 2362 in air rifle. UTEP shot a 2247 in smallbore and a 2317 in air rifle.
All six Mountaineers who competed in the match placed inside the top 10 of the overall leaderboard. West Virginia was led by senior Malori Brown, who led all shooters in aggregate (1183) and smallbore score (589). Of note, her 1183 overall set a new career high. The China Spring, Texas, native also shot a 594 in air rifle.
"Malori led the way in smallbore with a really disciplined and focused match," WVU coach Jon Hammond said. "Otherwise, there are definitely improvements we can make for tomorrow."
"In air rifle, we came back with a much better performance as a team, some really consistent scores across the whole team, and overall, not a bad day. There are things we can work on and improve, and it's always nice to come back to the same range a second day and be able to correct some of those things."
Junior Molly McGhin came in third on the match leaderboard, with an 1176 overall. The Griffin, Georgia, native tallied a 583 in smallbore and a 593 in air rifle. Finishing behind in fourth was senior Akihito Shimizu, who also shot an 1176. The Tokushima, Japan, native showed a 581 in smallbore and a 595 in air rifle.
Fifth-year senior Verena Zaisberger checked in at No. 5 in the match, after shooting a 580 in smallbore and a season-high 595 in air rifle (1175 combined).
Coming in at No. 7 was junior Becca Lamb, who shot a 578 in smallbore and a 594 in air rifle for an aggregate total of 1172.
Junior Matt Sanchez led all shooters in air rifle score in the match, with a season-best 597. Along with his 571 in smallbore, the Tampa, Florida, native shot an 1168 to place ninth.
In smallbore, the scores for Brown, Lamb, McGhin, Shimizu and Zaisberger counted. In air rifle, Lamb, McGhin, Sanchez, Shimizu and Zaisberger counted towards the team's total.
