Riggs Adds Ten to Men’s 2021-22 Swimming & Diving Roster
August 12, 2021 01:44 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving head coach Vic Riggs has announced the addition of ten student-athletes to the men's roster for the upcoming 2021-22 season.
"This is yet another very strong class for the men's program that will have an immediate impact in the water and in the classroom," Riggs said. "I look forward to getting their time as Mountaineers started!"
Three student-athletes are set to join the diving team, while seven others will be added to the swimming roster. Featured in the men's incoming class are Hayden Apel (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS), Riley Brown (Baton Rouge, Louisiana/Liberty Magnet HS), Jason Bunn (Wilmington, North Carolina/John T Hoggard HS), Glenn Eloriaga (Burlington, Ontario/Corpus Christi Secondary), Zhenya Ingram (Edmond, Oklahoma/American Energy Swim Club), Reilly Keaney (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley HS), Conner McBeth (New Castle, Pennsylvania/Neshannock HS), Braden Osborn (Mason, Ohio/Mason HS), Wesley Schauer (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek HS) and Jake Young (Mason, Ohio/King Mills HS).
Hayden Apel
Hilliard, Ohio | Hilliard Darby HS
Events: Diving
Apel on WVU: "The two main things that drew me to WVU were the fact that it had both majors that I was interested in (pre-physical therapy and forensics) and the amazing atmosphere of the swimming & diving team. It didn't seem to matter if you were a diver or swimmer – everyone was very welcoming. It was like a big family."
Riley Brown
Baton Rouge, La. | Liberty Magnet HS
Events: Backstroke and IM
Brown on WVU: "I chose WVU because I'm primarily a backstroker and you can see over the years that they have had great success in developing backstrokers. I was also very pulled in by the amount of new facilities that have been built, which is unlike any other school I looked at."
Jason Bunn
Wilmington, N.C. | John T Hoggard HS
Events: Diving
Bunn on WVU: "I chose WVU because the team was all one big family, more than any other team I have seen. Everyone, coaches included, really cared in a way that made you feel at home so fast. And no matter where you look, there is always a good view and sunset."
Glenn Eloriaga
Burlington, Ontario | Corpus Christi Secondary
Events: Diving
Eloriaga on WVU: "I chose WVU because my main goal was to find a school that balanced both athletics and academics. This school was able to succeed in both and more, to which I cannot wait to see what WVU has to offer. Learning about the campus, the student life and meeting the team makes it already feel like home."
Zhenya Ingram
Edmond, Ok. | American Energy Swim Club
Events: Butterfly, freestyle and backstroke
Ingram on WVU: "I chose WVU because of the team atmosphere and the way the coaches communicate with the athletes. I'm excited to be joining the team in a few weeks and can't wait for the upcoming four years."
Reilly Keaney
Greensboro, N.C. | Grimsley HS
Events: Breaststroke and IM
Keaney on WVU: "I chose WVU because I felt like I could contribute to the team in a great way and be a part of a great organization. WVU feels like my new home, and I'm excited to start my college career here."
Conner McBeth
New Castle, Pa. | Neshannock HS
Events: Backstroke, butterfly and freestyle
McBeth on WVU: "I knew I was destined to be a Mountaineer the first time I stepped on WVU's beautiful campus. I chose WVU because of their reputation for an excellent biology program. I am especially excited and thankful for the tremendous opportunity I have to challenge myself in the pool to reach levels of competition I have never experienced before."
Braden Osborn
Mason, Ohio | Mason HS
Events: Freestyle and butterfly
Osborn on WVU: "One of the main reasons I chose WVU was because of my parents. I look up to them in every way possible and hearing the stories they would tell me about their time at WVU helped me make my final decision."
Wesley Schauer
Beavercreek, Ohio | Beavercreek HS
Events: Butterfly and IM
Schauer on WVU: "I chose WVU because it felt like home from day one. The coaches, team and school have all been so welcoming. I can't wait to be a part of a competitive and supportive environment, as well as make use of all the great programs WVU has to offer."
Jake Young
Mason, Ohio | King Mills HS
Events: Breaststroke and IM
Young on WVU: "I chose WVU because of the beautiful campus and welcoming energy from the swim team. I knew it was the right place for me, and I can't wait to come down to WVU this fall."
