Wolf Named WVU Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After a career outing in Friday night's win at Kansas State, senior left-handed pitcher Jackson Wolf of the baseball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
 
Wolf struck out a career-high 10 batters in the Mountaineers' 4-3, 11-inning victory over the Wildcats at Tointon Family Stadium in Manhattan, Kansas. The Gahanna, Ohio, native tossed 8.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits on a career-high 128 pitches. He left the contest in the bottom of the ninth with a lead before settling for a no decision. Additionally, Wolf retired K-State in order three times. 
 
With the performance, Wolf has now tallied at least seven strikeouts in six of his nine starts this season. He enters the week with a 3.44 ERA and 64 strikeouts in a team-best 55 innings.
 
This Week in Women's Soccer: After earning a first-round bye, the No. 5-seeded Mountaineers begin their journey in the 2020-21 NCAA Tournament on Saturday in the second round against the winner of the Rice-Furman match … kickoff at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, is set for 12 p.m. ET. 
 
Last Week in Women's Soccer: WVU earned its 21st consecutive NCAA Tournament bid on April 19, good for the fifth-longest streak in the nation.
 
Notes: WVU is 23-17-5 all-time in the NCAA Tournament … the Mountaineers have never played Rice or Furman in their 25-year history as a program … West Virginia finished the 2020-21 regular season with a 10-2-1 mark, including 7-2 in Big 12 play … the Mountaineers were unbeaten in their spring, regular-season slate, finishing 3-0-1 with a pair of top-10 wins … WVU has won at least 10 games in each of the last 21 seasons, with at least one win over a top-10 opponent in 15 of the last 16 campaigns … this year's NCAA Tournament features 48 teams and will be played entirely in the state of North Carolina … the event runs from April 27-May 17 … WVU last played on April 10, a 1-1 draw at then-No. 12 Virginia.
 
This Week in Track and Field: West Virginia is back in action at home Saturday, May 1, for the Mountaineer Twilight, at the Track and Field Complex, at Mylan Park, in Morgantown.

Notes: On April 17 at the EKU Twilight, redshirt freshman Ceili McCabe made her 3,000-meter steeplechase debut … her performance broke the WVU outdoor program record with a first-place collegiate showing (9:57.93) and a second-place finish overall … McCabe's time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase surpassed former All-American Amy Cashin's school record of 9:58.75, which she set at the 2018 NCAA Championship, in Eugene, Oregon … junior Katherine Dowie also competed in the 3,000- meter steeplechase, placing sixth overall with a time of 10:17.3 … Dowie's 3,000-meter steeplechase time lands her fifth in WVU outdoor program history … at the Virginia Challenge on April 17 junior Sada Wright placed seventh in the discus throw with a personal-best distance of 48.46 meters … Wright's discus throw distance was second best in WVU program history.
 
This Week in Baseball: The Mountaineers return to Morgantown to begin an 11-game homestand, which begins with a three-game series against TCU from April 30-May 2, at Monongalia County Ballpark … Friday's series opener is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. ET, while Saturday and Sunday's games will begin at 2 p.m., and 1 p.m., respectively.
 
Last Week in Baseball: West Virginia (15-18, 6-9 Big 12) dropped two-of-three games at Kansas State, from April 23-25, at Tointon Family Stadium in Manhattan, Kansas … the Mountaineers earned a 4-3 win in 11 innings in Friday's series opener, before falling in the final two games, 5-2 and 9-4 … senior left-handed pitcher Jackson Wolf recorded one of the best outings of his career on Friday, tallying a career-high 10 strikeouts in 8.0 innings of work … the Gahanna, Ohio, native threw 128 pitches, a career high, and allowed three runs on six hits in a no decision … sophomore right-hander Jacob Watters earned the win after allowing no hits or runs in 3.0 innings out of the bullpen with six strikeouts … the Mountaineers scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning on a Wildcat throwing error … on the weekend, WVU was led offensively by sophomore catcher/infielder Matt McCormick, who went 6-for-12 (.500) with two doubles, two RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base … sophomore left-hander Jake Carr and freshman right-hander Carlson Reed took losses on the mound for WVU in the series. 
 
Notes: After the K-State series, the Mountaineers hold a 13-11 advantage over the Wildcats all-time … Saturday's game marked the 800th for WVU's Randy Mazey as a head coach, as well as fifth-year senior infielder Kevin Brophy's 100th career start at WVU … senior infielder Tyler Doanes' stolen base on Sunday marked the 36th of his career, moving him into a tie for No. 10 in program history in the category … WVU is 6-20 all-time against TCU … freshman infielder Mikey Kluska leads West Virginia with 36 hits and 23 RBI on the season … Brophy and McCormick are tied for the team lead with six home runs … Wolf, who has tallied at least seven strikeouts in six of his nine starts this season, enters the week with a 3.44 ERA and 64 strikeouts in a team-best 55 innings.
 
This Week in Golf: West Virginia compete in the Big 12 Golf Championship from April 26-28 in Hutchison, Kansas, at Prairie Dunes Country Club on the 6,974-yard, par-70 course … the format will consist of a total of 72 holes across three days with 36 holes scheduled on Monday, followed by 18 holes each on Tuesday and Wednesday … pairings will consist of twosomes, with play beginning off both the No. 1 and No. 10 tees each of the four rounds … West Virginia will be paired with Iowa State and will tee off on No. 1 at 10:30 a.m. ET on Monday.
 
Last Week in Golf: WVU was idle since winning the Mountaineer Invitational on April 13.
