No. 2 WVU Caps Fall Season with Quad-Match Victory

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 2-ranked West Virginia University rifle team tallied a match-high score of 4724 to secure a win in its fall finale on Sunday afternoon at the Bill McKenzie Mobile Rifle Range inside the WVU Shell Building.
No. 6 Air Force scored a 4703 to place second after going head-to-head with WVU in the morning session, while No. 8 Ohio State shot a 4671 to take third place. No. 12 Army came in fourth and notched a team score of 4653.
The Mountaineers swept both match disciplines, showing a smallbore score of 2348 and an air rifle total of 2376. Seven WVU shooters placed among the match's top-10 individuals, including freshman Natalie Perrin, who tallied an aggregate total of 1184 to claim first place. The Coopersville, Michigan, native a career-high 589 in smallbore and a 595 in air rifle.
"Today was a good, solid performance and result to finish the fall semester," WVU coach Jon Hammond said. "We had some more good individual performances today, and our smallbore was improved from yesterday. Natalie having the highest aggregate score is really pleasing to see from a freshman, and Verena had another strong performance and weekend in smallbore.
"There were lots of really positive things from this semester, but we have to keep working hard to improve. There are some other excellent teams this year, and we'll have to keep improving and learning from now until the spring semester."
Senior Verena Zaisberger finished in third place behind Air Force's Scott Rockett. The Hohenems, Austria, native tallied a combined score of 1183 and shot a 590 or better in both smallbore (591) and air rifle (592).
Juniors Malori Brown and Akihito Shimizu each tallied an aggregate score of 1180 and placed fifth and sixth, respectively. Brown notched a 588 in smallbore and a 592 in air rifle to tie her season bests in both disciplines, while Shimizu shot a 584 in smallbore and a 596 in air rifle.
Sophomores Tal Engler (586 smallbore, 593 air rifle) and Matt Sanchez (587 smallbore, 592 air rifle) finished in seventh and eighth place, respectively, with each student-athlete showing an aggregate score of 1179.
Fellow sophomore Molly McGhin came in ninth place ahead of Ohio State's Viktor Kiss. The Griffin, Georgia, native netted a combined score of 1178, including a 583 in smallbore and 595 in air rifle.
Senior Jared Eddy and junior Calista Smoyer rounded the scoring for West Virginia in the quad match. Eddy shot an aggregate total of 1176 (584 smallbore, 592 air rifle), and Smoyer tallied a 1174 overall (585 smallbore, 589 air rifle).
With Sunday's victory, WVU is now 50-0 all-time against Ohio State and 20-0 in its series with Air Force. Combined, the Mountaineers are now 70-0 against the pair.
West Virginia has concluded its fall season and will return to competition in the spring, beginning with a match against Navy in Annapolis, Maryland, on Saturday, Jan. 22.
